Job Summary

Performs motor vehicle maintenance and repair work. Performs maintenance and repairs on motor vehicles, small engines, generators, and related equipment. Repairs and modifies combustion powered light to heavy wheeled vehicles and equipment. Works under limited supervision with considerable latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Responsible for general boat maintenance (non-engine repairs). Responsible for handy-man-type repairs on buildings and training aids as well as fabrication of a variety of training aids. Operations will include both daily maintenance activities, fabrication, training, and field training support activities. The primary duty is tactical vehicle repair with additional secondary duties of facility maintenance and fabrication. Tertiary duties include field training support activities.

Role and Responsibilities
  • Inventory and maintain maritime-related equipment.
  • Schedule and complete routine preventive maintenance and minor repairs as necessary to ensure required vehicles are available for training events.
  • Advise Commander or Unit Logistics office of major repairs and overhauls that need to be accomplished by a manufacturer's authorized service facility or equivalent and if the watercraft or engine needs to be replaced. Schedule an off-base repair.
  • Maintain and provide inputs to improve or update regulations, publications, and pertaining to waterborne operations.
  • Maintain the Maritime and Vehicles MSDS and HAZMAT programs.
  • Maintain and repair unit-assigned tactical vehicles.
  • Forecast supplies, equipment, and future logistical requirements to facilitate future repairs of tactical vehicle fleet, unit-assigned boats, and additional supplies for handy-man activities or fabrication. Create a budget and spend plan based on this forecast, then place and execute orders through the Logistics Flight to obtain the items.
  • Coordinates the maintenance and repair of motor vehicles and mechanical equipment if repairs cannot be completed on-site.
  • Repairs and scheduled maintenance of systems to include diesel, gasoline and other types of internal combustion engines such as 2, 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines.
  • Repairs automatic and non-automatic transmissions, heavy duty drive line systems, and hydraulic utility systems and controls, and diagnoses the cause of mechanical failures.
  • Utilizes visual and auditory checks and test equipment, such as engine analyzers, compression testers, voltmeters, ohmmeters, and pressure gauges to determine the exact nature or extent of repair or adjustment necessary to complete work orders.
  • Determines whether any additional repairs are necessary.
  • Removes and disassembles engine and or assemblies, sub-assemblies, components, and fuel, hydraulic, and oil pressure systems.
  • Checks and repairs electrical and cooling systems.
  • Mounts weapon systems and weapon-system mounting brackets, swing-arms, etc. onto tactical vehicles to facilitate tactical use. Research and places orders for parts if required or not able to be fabricated effectively.
  • Fabricates mounting devices and accessories to customize vehicles to maximize tactical utility.
  • Paints, camouflages, customizes, and modifies tactical vehicles to maximize tactical utility.
  • Inspects, inflates, and changes wheels and tires and uses machines to mount new tires onto wheels.
  • Performs oil and filter changes, transmission service, brake and suspension repair, tire installation and repair, wheel alignments, air conditioning diagnosis and repair, and other scheduled maintenance to ensure equipment is properly serviced.
  • Tests motors and engines for satisfactory performance.
  • Installs after-market accessories and equipment.
  • Maintains records of work performed and parts used.
  • Uses on-board or hand-held electronic diagnostic equipment and other specialized tools and equipment to include but not limited to pressure gauges, feeler and dial gauges, ignition timers, injection testers, vacuum and fuel pump testing equipment to isolate and adjust malfunctions.
  • Troubleshoots equipment by servicing and making repairs including removing and replacing new or rebuilt assemblies such as voltage regulators, generators, brake cylinders, etc.
  • Removes and cleans fuel tank and spark plugs and adjusts tappets.
  • Changes and adjusts distributor and similar work.
  • Performs other preventive maintenance operations as required.
  • Repairs, transports, and assists in the field use of inflatable vehicle decoys for training support to include but not limited to inflatable tanks, technicals, and anti-aircraft systems.
  • Comply with company standard operating policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications and Education
  • Shall have three years' experience in the operation, maintenance and repair of small engines, and vehicles. Experience with watercraft is desired.
  • Shall have three years' experience and current certification in maintenance and use of High-Pressure Air Compressors (HPACs).
  • Shall have three years' experience and understanding of basic welding in pertaining to minor and major vessel/vehicular structure repair.
  • Shall have three years of experience working as a vehicle mechanic.
  • Shall have experience or training of personal protection equipment (PPE) required under Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA).
  • Shall have three years technical background and training experience be able to analyze various equipment tests and provide instruction to personnel.
  • Shall obtain and maintain license(s) to operate and maintain assigned small engines, vehicles, and watercraft.
  • Shall obtain and maintain certifications to be able to repair all assigned equipment.
Preferred Qualifications and Education
  • Desired to have experience safely operating tactical vehicles.
  • Experience with USAF PMEL and HAZMAT handling requirements is desired.
Work authorization/security clearance requirements
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
