Officer I- Protective Services

Under the general supervision of a Protective Services Lieutenant, the Officer is responsible for providing basic security services to the hospital community during the assigned shift. The Officer shall respond safely, effectively, and efficiently (SEE) to all related matters that come to his/her attention and in the performance of activities as assigned.

Responsibilities

1. Upon being hired, the Officer will undergo a 4 to 6 week training cycle. The Officer will be placed with a Senior Officer when training on the floor. This training will include working multiple shifts and locations for familiarization and experience. The Officer will learn multiple task in a classroom setting involving physical intervention and verbal techniques. Once the Officer has completed training the following duties will be performed.

2. Conducts random, but frequent, patrols in his/her assigned area to detect and appropriately respond to safety and/or security issues. These patrols can be performed on foot, motor vehicle, or bicycle, as assigned.

3. Intervenes in interpersonal conflict safely and effectively to maintain order. Provides appropriate intervention and/or assistance by detaining perpetrators of criminal acts, restraining hostile or uncooperative patients, escorting belligerent visitors from the premises.

4. Conducts preliminary investigations, as appropriate and/or when requested, regarding those incidents that amount to a criminal act or any incident that requires safety/security intervention.

5. Documents, by utilizing standard departmental/hospital forms, activities and incidents that are required to be or should be recorded.

6. Conducts lock/unlock activities as required and appropriate.

7. Performs staff escorts and/or provides transportation to staff and/or visitors, as appropriate.

8. Performs vehicle assistance (jump starts, lock-outs,) as required and appropriate.

9. Enforces hospital parking policies and procedures, as appropriate.

10. Responds to internal disaster incidents and provides appropriate assistance.



Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

1. Minimum education level of High School diploma. Prefer Associate's Degree from an accredited institution and/or equivalent law enforcement/fire fighting/military experience and training.

2. Valid Ohio Operator's License with no more than one violation and/or at-fault accident in previous two years. No more than two violations/at fault accidents in previous 3 years.

3. Ability to read and comprehend hospital/departmental policies and procedures, criminal statutes, and regulatory publications.

4. Ability to successfully conduct preliminary investigations and document findings on standard departmental or hospital forms.

5. Sufficient interpersonal skills to effectively interact with all persons, regardless of position, ethnicity, sex, age, or economic status.

6. Sufficient interpersonal skills to consistently and equitably enforce the policies of the department and hospital and the ability to effectively intervene in interpersonal conflict.

7. Ability to write legibly.

8. Officer will be required to complete the IAHSS Basic Security Officer training within the first six months of being hired at the officer's expense. Once the officer has successfully completed the training, the Security Department will reimburse the officer the cost of the test.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

No physical limitations to preclude standing and walking for extended periods of time (constant), heavy lifting (occasional), driving (constant), and/or sudden physical exertion such as running, restraining, or pushing heavy objects (occasional).
