Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
Three or more years working in an Environmental Health and Safety Program or in a research laboratory with direct experience following and implementing standard laboratory policies, procedures, and best practices.
Position Summary
The Safety and Compliance Officer ( SCO) is a highly responsible professional position requiring a bachelor's degree, extensive knowledge, experience, and skills within specific programmatic area(s) with appropriate professional and/or technical certifications highly desirable. This position bridges the gap between the responsibilities of an Assistant Safety and Compliance Officer and Senior Safety and Compliance Officer. The SCO must maintain a high degree of professionalism and integrity in representing the University and model a culture of safety. The SCO is a primary liaison and point-of-contact within specific programmatic areas for campus departments, including areas such as research, clinical, academic, athletic, and support services. The SCO is a front-line consultant involved with developing engagement insights and helping to drive results for the client. They identify critical information, develop analysis, share information, and make recommendations and assessments related to the engagement issues. The SCO is responsible for providing comprehensive health, safety, and/or compliance services and assisting in the University goal of a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace and academic environment. The work of a SCO is primarily administrative in nature and involves activities such as: the receipt, processing, and maintenance of health, safety and compliance protocols; advising faculty, staff, students and researchers regarding safety and compliance issues; analysis and interpretation of routine to highly complex policies, regulations, standards, and guidelines; providing training; and safety and compliance documentation and communication. The SCO will handle a case load of safety and/or compliance related tasks of high complexity with considerable independence under administrative supervision. Other responsibilities include actively promoting and managing specific aspects of safety and compliance and providing assistance to faculty, staff, and students.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Proven professionalism and integrity in representing safety and/or compliance offices or programs

  • Leadership aptitude including clear focus on customer service as well as safety and compliance; ability to work within a strong and effective team gaining synergy across discipline boundaries
  • Experience in active consensus-building and principle-based negotiation; ability to grasp needs and concerns in varied areas of safety and compliance and solve complex problems through compromise when necessary and appropriate
  • Perform assigned tasks from general instruction and established procedures
  • Excellent professional oral and written communication skills to maintain effective and cooperative relationships with students, faculty, staff, coworkers, public, and regulatory agencies
  • Ability to implement continuous quality improvement through the use of relevant qualitative and quantitative metrics in assessing compliance and performance
  • Ability to use electronic safety, compliance, and research administration platforms; word processing, database; spreadsheet; and presentation computer programs
  • Extensive knowledge of State and Federal environmental health and safety regulations as well as nationally accepted standards, guidelines, and other related conventions on safety and compliance
  • Extensive knowledge and skills in technical safety disciplines (e.g., radiation safety, industrial hygiene, biosafety, chemical safety, environmental monitoring and sampling methods).
  • Extensive knowledge and skills to conduct in-service training and educational programs in applicable programmatic areas
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks simultaneously, due to the diversity of safety and compliance services, and the wide-range of potential work locations on campus
  • Participate as a member of an on-call response team for after-hours events
  • Wear and use personal protective equipment for hazardous materials handling and incident
  • Possess/complete and maintain applicable professional/technical certifications
  • Stand, walk, and negotiate occasional awkward work locations and paths of travel.
  • Work in a variety of physical environments, including weather extremes, potential confined spaces, chemical/biological/radiological laboratories, animal care and use facilities, etc.
  • Periodically perform short duration physical exertions, including light-medium weight lifting, pushing, pulling, stair or ladder climbing, etc. in support of a safety investigation, area or operations survey, or incident response.
  • Ability to obtain background check for access to certain controlled quantities of radioactive materials
  • Ability to wear a respirator, personal protective equipment and pass physical fitness medical evaluation

  • Use standard business office computer equipment and software.
  • Conduct radiological work and perform emergency response activities, including but not limited to wearing personal protective equipment, climbing stairs, and occasionally lifting up to 30 lbs.

  • Serves and supports the University's mission in Radiation Safety, Laser Safety, and
  • in other aspects of Research Safety, as needed.
  • Reports survey findings, maintains regulatory required records, and effectively utilizes electronic safety, compliance, and research administration platforms.
  • Works in potentially hazardous environments utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment. Provides technical assistance and assists with containment and clean-up of small and moderate size releases.
  • Conducts comprehensive audits and inspections of on-campus and remote campus laboratories and/or non-laboratory areas to identify unsafe conditions and practices, and makes engineering, work practice, and administrative improvement recommendations.
  • Conducts routine safety training and monitoring of employee exposure and investigates exposure incidents involving radiation, radioactive materials, x-ray, or laser exposure.

  • Supports UGA's Occupational Exposure to Radiation Monitoring Program.
  • Distribute and collect dosimeters on a monthly and quarterly basis
  • Managing participants, generating and tracking UGA exposure reports
  • Requesting and uploading exposure data from other institutions, and shipping and tracking of dosimeters to and from vendor.

Member of Hazardous Materials Spill Response Team/On-Call After-Hours PREHS
Rotation.

  • Participates in an incident response team, responding to releases and spills of hazardous chemicals, infectious agents, radioactive materials, and /or other environmental releases.
  • Actively involved in On-Call Rotation and assignment for After-Hours, Weekend and Holiday Emergency Response.
  • Communicates and coordinates with Campus Police and County Fire and Emergency Services in emergency events.
