Demonstrates creativity and ingenuity in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions to complex design, financial, marketing, or administrative problems.

Research AI Program/Product Manager works as part of the Research Informatics & User Success team within the Research Informatics group of the Academic Research Services, a UCSF research IT department.

In collaboration with the research and research IT leaders, UCSF Enterprise AI team, research community and other UCSF stakeholders, develops the vision for technology tools, infrastructure, and services that enable AI-empowered research. Considering both research community needs and institutional priorities and constraints, the Research AI Program/Product Manager develops roadmaps for Research AI tools, infrastructure, and services and operates program that provides AI-focused consultation and solution services to researchers.
Responsibilities include product strategy for Research AI tools and infrastructure and operations leadership for Research AI solutions services; roadmap development, prioritization, and execution; fostering key collaborations and partnerships. Key tasks include:

  • Conducting user needs and product discovery (tracking, analysis, presentation)
  • Maintaining up to date understanding of relevant institutional priorities and constraints
  • As part of the Research-AI-focused product team, developing product strategy and roadmap that responds to user community needs (especially important in rapidly evolving AI environment);
  • Close collaboration with the UCSF Enterprise AI team to inform the roadmap;
  • Co-leading the efforts to organize, facilitate and develop UCSF-wide AI community of practice
  • Aligning with leadership and stakeholders on compliance, governance, and other institutional requirements and constraints to plan solutions to user community needs.
  • Presenting product vision, strategy, and roadmap plans & progress to partners and stakeholders at all levels of organization
  • Managing and supporting AI solutions service program for researchers:
    • Coordinating planning and development of ARS services related to UCSF AI tools for research;
    • Overseeing ongoing intake, onboarding, communications, and governance process;
    • Responding to consult requests from users;
    • Providing AI solution consultations to researchers
    • Overseeing development of the knowledge base content;
    • Managing internal communication, team coordination, and workload tracking.


The Research AI Program/Product manager must develop and contribute to their team a solid knowledge of the various constraints of the institution. The Research AI Program/Product manager must also develop and contribute to the team a deep knowledge of research IT users and customers, and the data about how our customers engage with our AI-focused products and services. The Research AI Program/Product manager is expected to track industry trends and the competitive landscape around AI technologies. We look for the leader who builds culture where each member of the team contributes their passion and their ideas. The Research AI Program/Product manager must collaborate closely with the other members of Research AI product teams that include Research AI Solutions specialist, Informatics specialists, research AI and data engineers to discover effective solutions, and then work together to deliver those solutions to research community. We look for a lead contributor who is ready to take ownership of the goals, even when this means working with and through others to achieve the necessary results. This is an individual contributor role. This role needs to be able to influence teammates, colleagues, and key executives, through use of data and logic.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

Academic Research Services (ARS) serves the UCSF research community by providing integrated HIPAA-compliant services that span systems, infrastructure, data assets & tools, analytical and computational environments, and data acquisition and management.

ARS teams support enterprise Research Core and Compliance Systems, Research IT Infrastructure, and Research Informatics and Data. ARS empowers biomedical scientific investigations by offering secure Biobanking, computing environments, enterprise research data assets, storage, data capture, management and analysis tools, and support services that meet broad range of research needs.

ARS team is the bridge between the research community and technology infrastructure and tools. It provides paths to solutions when the tools/infrastructure are not readily available for a given problem.
ARS Informatics' key focus areas are data assets, informatics resources, technology tools and infrastructure that support data driven research every step of the way.
In addition to developing the research infrastructure, data, and tools, ARS team acquires, organizes and disseminates knowledge in a way that makes its products usable by a wide range of researchers at UCSF. Our team, closely working with like-minded partners, educates users, meeting them where they are and providing the tools that work for a wide range of needs, skillsets, and problems.

We focus on serving researchers and on bringing together connected and collaborative communities that contribute to and benefit from shared knowledge and support.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • 5+ years working on technology-powered products as either a product manager, product designer, engineer, data analyst, data scientist, or user researcher.
  • Advanced knowledge of product management and product development concepts, practices, standards and processes.
  • Proven ability to identify key issues critical to the organization's long-range success of a desired product or service.
  • Proven ability to research, collect and analyze information to use in determining product options or alternatives.
  • Advanced organization and project management skills to lead large or multiple cross-functional teams.
  • Advanced oral communication skills to effectively present, negotiate, convey and explain information.
  • Advanced written communications skills to draft clear, concise documentation, reports and specifications.
  • Ability to lead, build consensus and promote the exchange of information among project team, internal and external constituencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite software.
  • Demonstrated understanding of the techniques and methods of modern product discovery and product delivery.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn multiple functional areas of organization - engineering, design, finance, procurement, research administration or communications.
  • Demonstrated ability to figure out solutions to hard problems with many constraints, using sound judgement to assess risks, and to lay out argument in a well-structured, data-informed, written narrative.
  • Proven ability to engage with engineers, designers, institution leaders and stakeholders in a constructive and collaborative relationship.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with AI technologies and their application in research.
  • Experience in a research or academic environment.
  • Experience with HIPAA compliance and other relevant regulatory requirements.
