Job Summary

Provide comprehensive spiritual services to patients and caregivers. Such services include an initial spiritual assessment, ongoing support, liaison with the spiritual community, as well as appropriate participation in planning and conducting funeral/memorial services, and participation in overall bereavement assessment and follow up. This position will minister to a diverse population and must be sensitive to their beliefs, cultural and ethnic heritage, and spiritual history. This position is supervised under the general direction of the Human Service supervisors and the manager for Human Services.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Valid CA driver's license is required and employees must participate in the DMV pull notice system. Auto insurance must comply with UCDH Travel Regulations Policy G-28, pg. 18, item iii; Insurance Coverage: 50/100/50.
  • Ordination or commissioning by one's faith group to serve as a religious leader and endorsement or official recognition by that faith group to function as a chaplain.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Completion of at least one (1) unit but preferably four (4) units of clinical, pastoral education, accredited by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education.
  • Prior chaplain experience in hospital, home-based palliative care, and/or hospice setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of spiritual assessment models and assessment skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish connections with patients quickly and to function well in crisis/trauma situations.
  • Advanced pastoral judgement and triage skills.
  • Full knowledge of principles and practices of delivering spiritual care and short-term counseling to patients and families in clinical environments.
  • Skilled at providing spiritual support and guidance on the issues of death, dying, grief, loss, and disability.
  • Thorough knowledge of a variety of religious and spiritual traditions, and of giving appropriate care in a multi-faith setting.
  • Thorough organizational, prioritization, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently with patients and caregivers/families while also participating in the healthcare team providing coordination of care.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Eligible for certification with the Associate of Oppressional Chaplains (APC), National Association of Catholic Chaplains (NACC), Neshama: Association of Jewish Chaplains (NAJC), or the Canadian Association for Spiritual Care (CASC) is preferred.
  • Master's degree in theology, divinity, religious studies, and/or equivalent in relevant training/experience.
  • One-three (1-3) years prior chaplain experience specifically in home-based palliative care and/or hospice setting.

Department Overview

Home Care Services is made up of three primary programs: Hospice (inpatient and home care), Home Health, and Palliative Care. This position would be a part of the Palliative Care and Hospice Program (home care).

Work Environment

Participates in DMV pull notice system. Position requires travel to various locations and sites. Must be able to work occasion overtime, on-call, weekends, and holidays. Some restricted vacation due to program needs. This position is subject to criminal background investigation. May be subject to alcohol and drug testing. Home Care Services follows the vaccination and masking policies and procedures set by UC Davis Health including COVID, influenza, and TB. Vaccination requirements vary.
