Overview

The Certified Medical Assistant / Registered Medical Assistant performs routine administrative and patient care support duties in a medical practice to assist medical and/or nursing staff in the examination and treatment of patients and ensures that the office runs smoothly.
Qualifications

License/Certifications:
Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) - American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA); Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AMT) - American Medical Technologists (AMT); Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NRCMA) - National Association for Health Professionals (NAHP); Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) - National Healthcareer Association (NHA); Basic Life Support (BLS) within 30 days - American Heart Association (AHA); Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (ARMA) - American Registry of Medical Assistants (ARMA); Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) (AAH) - American Allied Health (AAH); Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT) - National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT)

Education:
H.S. Diploma/GED

Responsibilities

  • Rooming patients:

    • Collecting pertinent information regarding the patient's chief complaint, family history, social history, surgical history, and medication reconciliation upon arrival for a patient visit.
    • Rooming of patients from the lobby to the exam room, including all vital signs.
  • Telephone Interactions:

    • Completing necessary telephone communications with patients, families, pharmacies, and/or other health care facilities as directed.
    • Gathering information and maintaining patient information via telephone per department-specific processes and policies.
  • Administrative tasks:

    • Patient check-in or check-out.
    • Prior authorizations.
    • Scheduling appointments.
    • Verification of benefits.
    • Coordination of referrals and testing.
  • Office procedures:

    • Performing office procedures as directed and per department-specific competencies.
    • Conducting other testing at the point of care.
    • Setting up and assisting with procedures such as biopsies, tube placements, chemical cautery, etc.
    • Spraying patients with lidocaine/afrin prior to scope procedures.
  • Patient instructions:

    • Providing patients with written instructions regarding procedures, medications, or follow-up instructions at the direction of the provider.
    • Retrieving and providing condition-specific education from the internet, internal website, or printed materials per the provider's directions and orders.
  • Medication administration:

    • Administering medications per the provider's order.
    • Providing assistance with prescription medication refills per department protocols.
    • Calling medications into pharmacies, notifying patients of refills, and documenting actions within the EMR per provider orders.
  • Competency maintenance:

    • Maintaining department-specific competencies related to point of care testing, equipment handling, and specialty training.
    • Being competent with high-level disinfecting as well as instrument packaging, and autoclave maintenance and use.
  • Technical tasks:

    • Uploading outside CDs and photos to Epic and transferring scope videos from the flash drive to the I-drive.
    • Setting up scope towers and cleaning all scopes when the exam is complete.
  • Provider assistance:

    • Assisting the provider as directed.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $17.33per hour - $28.07per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
