Leupold & Stevens is seeking a highly motivated and innovative development manager to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will play a key part in the research, development, and application of advanced material technologies for Leupold's future products. Working in collaboration with our technical teams across all departments, you will help define and execute the technical development roadmap for new product material needs in optics, electronics, advanced materials, and manufacturing technology. This role's primary responsibility will be managing new engagements and development relationships with external partners and suppliers to meet short- and long-term technical requirements.

What You'll Be Doing as a Technology Development Manager:
Overarching & Strategic


  • Manage the technical materials strategy to meet both short- and long-term engineering needs.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of Leupold's product requirements through engagement with internal teams and research into best practices across optics and electronics.
  • Stay current with global materials trends, supplier capabilities, and regulatory shifts that could impact company strategies.
  • Seek out and establish partnerships to source innovative materials and components aligned with product and manufacturing roadmaps.
  • Own Engineering R&D collaborations with external partners.
  • Influence stakeholders at various levels, bringing together diverse perspectives to drive a unified, strategic supply approach.
  • Apply professional engineering concepts consistently to lead problem-solving efforts.



New Product Execution


  • Translate marketing requirements into engineering specifications with proven design methods.
  • Conduct independent research to evaluate specifications and develop concept/prototype models for moderately complex projects.
  • Provide technical support on assignments during the New Product Program (NPP) design cycle.
  • Identify, screen, and evaluate suppliers for quality, cost, and delivery, collaborating with supply chain teams to ensure partners meet technical and growth needs.
  • Advise on technical requirements for contracts, negotiations, and supply agreements.
  • Serve as the primary technical contact between internal development teams and external suppliers to enhance collaboration.
  • Verify that sourced materials meet specifications and quality standards; participate in design reviews to align vendor capabilities with engineering needs.
  • Prepare analyses and documentation to support critical decision-making and strategic negotiations, ensuring sound engineering outcomes.
  • Develop material, component, and product test plans, analyze test data, and document results, ensuring specifications are met from concept to launch.



Continuous Improvement


  • Monitor supplier cost, schedule, and scope to secure the best quality and value.
  • Recommend cost-saving initiatives, including make-versus-buy analyses and alternative sourcing options, in collaboration with quality and supply chain teams.
  • Cultivate existing suppliers and identify new sources as needed.
  • Proactively identify risks related to material sourcing and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Lead or participate in continuous improvement efforts, independently initiating solutions to both routine and unique challenges.



Skills and Experiences You'll Need as a Technology Development Manager:



  • Bachelor's Degree in an Engineering Discipline with +10 years of relevant experience required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Advanced technical or business degree desired.
  • Technical experience in optics, electronics, and/or advanced materials.
  • International business travel experience with the ability to adapt to varying business and geographic cultural differences.
  • Multilingual capability highly desired.
  • Ability to read engineering design prints and understand of the application of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance systems.
  • Experience in negotiating technical specifications between multiple stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively across business functions.



Work Environment for a Technology Development Manager:
Normal office environment with occasional travel and exposure to manufacturing operations. Requires significant travel within the US, Europe, and Asia to engage with technical partners.
