Position Purpose:

The Director of Nursing will plan and coordinate nursing services with those of the medical and administrative systems. The Director of Nursing will participate as a member of VersAbility's management team in planning, policy formulation, and administrative decision making with attention to the role, functions, and operations of the nursing services. This position is responsible for the medical care of people served, management, resource management, and fiscal management. The Director of Nursing will report to the Vice President of Community Living.

Primary Duties:

  • Defines and maintains the standards of nursing practice in the homes and day support programs
  • Assesses the quality of care rendered
  • Initiates the development of policies and procedures that govern nursing services and other services under his or her supervision
  • Verifies employee credentials under his or her position supervision
  • Collaborates with other departments and agencies regarding resources and services for improved patient care and staff development
  • Plans, develops, and implements a budget process for staffing and services rendered
  • Evaluates the quality and cost-effectiveness of staffing and services within the goals of the homes
  • Serves as a spokesperson for nursing matters and represents the company with professional nursing and related organizations
  • Participates in meetings and committees
  • Encourages and supports research and improvement studies that can make meaningful contributions to the quality and economy of nursing services
  • Supervises the day-to-day operations of the nursing team including the on-call schedule, time sheets, overtime, PTO requests
  • Performs nursing assessment, prepares nursing care plans, and nursing reports
  • Provides clinical supervisions to Community Living LPNs/RN
  • Consults with physician, consultant and other clinical and medical professionals regarding psychological, medical plans and treatments under the general guidance of the Director. Serves as liaison with the Medical Consultant, Pharmacy and primary care physicians
  • Participates in ID Team and monthly meetings as needed
  • Coordinates a system of supervision with RN Consultant and RNS
  • Manages orders for medications, medication storage, medical supplies and equipment for individuals within the ICFID program
  • Transports individuals to medical and psychological appointments when needed
  • Develops and implements medical protocols, policies, and tracking charts with RN/RN Consultant
  • Conducts medication administration, medical record audits, observations, reviews incident reports and monitors nursing care plans for accuracy
  • Participates in Nursing and CL Department meetings and attends other meetings and seminars as needed
  • Assists in the recruitment and hiring of nurses
  • Assists with the planning and organizing of nursing orientation and in -service training for nurses, direct support professional and other agency staff
  • Administers individual medication as needed
  • Participates in on call schedule
  • Complies with federal, state, and other accreditation licensing standards for the agency/programs to include record keeping, individual rights, confidentially, input from person served, outcome management reports, nursing regulations as well as other requested duties
  • Participates in department planning and budgeting processes
  • Collaborates with Community Living Leadership Team and agency programs to meet the health needs of the individuals
  • Assists in preparation for ICF certification/annual inspections and Licensure reviews
  • Researches and keeps abreast of current medical trends in the field as it relates to the individuals
  • Aide families, individuals, care providers and other stakeholders with resolution for problem solving
  • Provide support for community integration efforts and HCBS Rights Compliance
  • Other duties as assigned

Education:
A bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred. The successful candidate must have Certification as Registered Nurse and a current Virginia Sate Nursing License.

Experience:
Minimum of three years of progressive supervisory experience in mental health, intellectual disability, or related field which includes experience in clinical supervision of Licensed Practical Nurses.

Skills Knowledge & Abilities:

  • Must have a comprehensive knowledge of intellectual disability or other developmental disabilities, mental health and physical disabilities
  • Must have knowledge and ability to acquire medical and clinical resources to meet individuals' medical and psychological needs
  • Must have knowledge of various medical treatment, first aid, cpr, medication administration, and infection control
  • Must be able to work independently performing duties and responsibilities under general supervision and guidance of Vice President of Residential Services
  • Must be able to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  • Must be able to maintain effective inter and intra-agency relationships
  • Must have the ability to effectively supervise and coach nurses to optimize their potential
  • Must have the ability to multitask
  • Must be able to use a computer proficiently for typing reports, managing time, researching diagnoses, communicating via e-mail
  • Must have a valid Virginia License and must be insurable under VersAbility's auto insurance
