Overview
We seek to hire two high school students to participate in research with scientists at the Bingham Research Center and other researchers at the USU-Uintah Basin campus in Vernal. We are looking for students with interest in one or more of the following areas:
  • Statistical and manual analysis of environmental data
  • Organic chemistry/chemical synthesis
  • Computer programming and modeling
  • Creative scientific writing and public communication
  • Chemical measurements and analysis in the field and laboratory
  • Wildlands management, including remote/drone sensing

All training for any of these projects will be provided. Prior experience is not required.

Flexible hours and time off. We expect high school students to work limited hours during the school year (perhaps 10-15 hours per week) and more hours during summer (20-40 hours per week).

We prefer to hire current high school juniors, with the expectation that new hires begin work at the start of the third trimester of the 2024-25 high school academic year and continue work through summer 2025, the 2025-26 school year (senior year), and perhaps also summer 2026. We encourage applications from all backgrounds, communities, and levels of experience with scientific research.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Minimum cumulative high school GPA of 3.5 is required. Unofficial transcripts are acceptable for the application.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Previous experience in the above areas is a benefit but not required; there is emphasis on finding applicants with an open mind, a positive attitude, with the ability to work both independently and in a team.
  • We also value applicants with a proven record of taking initiative in assignments, and producing careful, thoughtful, and consistent work. Coursework in science, mathematics, computing, and/or statistics is preferred.
