Job Description

Position Overview:

Direct the quality assurance program for the plant. Supervises the quality control leaders and technicians in performance of duties relating to inspection, laboratory testing, statistical process control and salvage operations. Implement, maintain and modify as appropriate the plant's quality management system to improve business operating systems and meet the requirements of customer and best practice audits. Lead/assist with the corrective action of quality related problems at the plant and/or customer location and start-up of new products/processes. Assist in troubleshooting technical problems.

Essential Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Design, implement and direct the quality assurance program for the plant.
  • Establish/maintain quality program, including but not limited to:
  • Plant management responsibility
  • Document and data control
  • Control of customer supplied materials and nonconforming product/material
  • Product identification and traceability
  • Inspecting/testing procedures and control of related equipment
  • Corrective and preventive actions
  • Internal quality audits (housekeeping, GMP, etc.)
  • Establish/monitor/maintain statistical process control (SPC) programs.
  • Advise and instruct local managers in utilization of SPC data. Provide consistent ongoing analysis of process capability (CPK) statistics. Determine, recommend, and assist in continuous improvement programs to meet plant/division quality objective and advise the plant manager of appropriate action plans. Suggest improvements in procedures and techniques to improve product and customer acceptance.
  • Establish/monitor and control hold for inspection (HFI) procedures to ensure nonconforming materials do not enter the production process and are properly identified and segregated.
  • Coordinate quality activities with other division/plant personnel seeking mutual agreement on problems involving coordination.
  • Inspection of incoming purchased materials, work-in-process material, rework materials and finished goods. Assure the required level of quality through visual inspection, statistical sampling and laboratory testing of materials. Ascertain the reasons for nonconforming materials.
  • Performance of operator and technicians tests - section weights, wall thickness, dimensional characteristics, glue usage and patterns, banding tension, stretch wrap usage and load to force, etc.
  • Processing of all scrap materials including but not limited to product salvage and regrind, corrugated salvage and other materials.
  • Design and implement accurate reporting and recording of scrap, reprocessed materials. Control the movement of these materials.
  • Ascertain the disposition of materials placed on HFI.
  • Develop and implement continuous improvement plans for defect prevention programs by determining the cause of chronic defects. Recommend and stimulate corrective action with plant personnel/staff managers by encouraging an atmosphere of continuous improvement and employee involvement programs. Provide leadership in campaigning for quality improvements.
  • Provide consistent ongoing analysis of defect costs/customer complaints in order to provide plant manager and division quality manager with appropriate actions.
  • Lead quality initiatives and procedures to ensure best in class practices are maintained at the facility. Serve as local contact for external audit programs (AIB, HACCP, ISO9000) and assist plant management in implementing corrective actions to such audits.
  • Serve as the plant representative for the plant in dealing with customer complaints or quality problems. Travel as required to customer locations to ascertain the nature of problems and their impacts.
  • Design, implement, and coordinate training programs for managers, staff and employees to assure uniform quality standards are defined and expectations communicated.
  • Manage quality department supplies and expense budget and ensure spending is cost effective.
  • Responsible for following Good Manufacturing Practices and any other applicable Prerequisite Programs associated with the Food Safety System.
  • Understand and follow EHS policy and requirements specified in applicable EHS documents.
  • Know where applicable system documents are located.
  • Report actual and potential EHS incidents and emergencies to managers or supervisors.
  • Communicate system non-conformances to managers or supervisors.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor degree in a technical discipline preferred.
  • Five years related experience in a quality assurance leadership role in a manufacturing organization.
  • Three years related experience in blow and/or injection molding manufacturing (plastic).
  • Knowledge of SPC, blueprints, and problem solving techniques.
  • Three years related experience with ISO 9000/QS 9000 quality systems.
