Job Title: Genetic Counselor Instructor

Job Summary:



The Department of Neurology is looking to fill a full-time Genetic Counselor position to provide clinical care in genetics and metabolic diseases to the population of the State of Colorado by demonstrating strong genetic knowledge and expertise. Our dynamic Genetic Counselor will also help to influence vital behaviors in supporting the mission of the department. This position is an integral resource for neurology health care providers, laboratories, and support state regarding genetic counseling.

This position works for University of Colorado | Department of Neurology, but also serves the University of Colorado Hospital on the Anschutz Medical Campus, as well as several affiliated community hospitals throughout the state. This full-time position is primarily located at the Anschutz Medical Campus. This position will also travel to outreach clinics. Hours are usually 8:00 to 5:00 weekdays, but occasionally longer hours are required, depending on department needs. Providers in this position will occasionally be asked to give an educational talk at community education days, which typically occur on weekends.

Key Responsibilities:



  • Collect, review and interpret patient and family medical history, medical records, test results, and other relevant information in collaboration with others
  • Provide outpatient and inpatient genetic counseling with known or suspected genetic disorders to patients, families, and colleagues
  • Research, maintain, and apply knowledge of trends and developments in genetic disease research, testing, and treatment
  • Coordinate testing and communicate results to patients and healthcare providers
  • Identify and provide referrals for testing, treatment, support, and advocacy
  • Educate to empower providers in the adoption of genetic screening, consistent with standard of care
  • Provide meaningful mentorship and supervision to rotating genetic counseling graduate students
  • Deliver relevant scientific, clinical and educational support to students, residents, fellows, and providers
  • Provide education and patient care by promptly responding to patient and provider messages regarding genetic testing, questions, and results interpretation

Onsite - this role is expected to work onsite and is located in Aurora, CO

This position will be in-person in the Neuromuscular Medicine and Movement Disorders sections within the Department of Neurology, which consists of several physician providers, fellows, and APPs. They will provide in person counseling to patients in these departments. In addition, they will receive and appropriately triage and respond to questions and queries from neurology providers in the department beyond these two sections. This position will also have telehealth clinics dedicated seeing referrals placed by providers in the department of neurology. Other possible referrals include (but are not limited to) Epilepsy, Neuro-Cognitive Behavior, Adult Neurodevelopmental, Neuro-ophthalmology, and Neuro-Vascular/Stroke. This position will work alongside another genetic counselor in the Neurology department in which work and clinics will be shared equitably.

This position provides predominantly outpatient consultations and will engage and collaborate with colleagues across the Department of Neurology, University of Colorado Hospitals, and external constituents. This position also includes supervising and evaluating genetic counseling graduate students as part of their formal rotation through the University of Colorado Anschutz Genetic Counseling Program.

Qualifications:



Minimum Qualifications:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Instructor:



  • Master's Degree from a program accredited by the Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling (ACGC)
  • American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) certification or eligibility for ABGC Active Candidate Status (must have certification within 12 months of hire)
  • Two or more years of post-graduation experience in clinical genetic counseling


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Experience in one or more specialty clinics
  • Experience in interdisciplinary clinics
  • Experience with neurologic conditions such as Huntington's disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis
  • Experience working with adult patient populations
  • Active involvement with the Department of Neurology students, residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, and providers


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:



  • Knowledge of principles of genetics and practice of medical, clinical and laboratory genetics required.
  • Knowledge of standard inpatient and outpatient clinical operations and procedures.
  • Ability to develop and present educational information to patients as well as to professionals. This includes education in the clinic as well as presentations during community events to a variety of learners.
  • Ability to provide genetic counseling, and technical information in a comprehensive, understandable, nondirective manner to patients and families.
  • Ability to work independently as well as serving as a team member.
  • Ability to gather data and prepare reports.
  • Skilled in communication, both oral and written.
  • Skilled in establishing priorities and managing workflow across different clinics with multiple providers.
  • Ability to develop collaborative or independent research or quality improvement projects.
  • Ability to efficiently complete tasks, including notes and response to messages, in a timely and professional manner.

Anticipated Pay Range:



The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE:

Instructor: $75,000 to $89,000

The above salary range (or hiring range) represents the University's good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible compensation at the time of posting. This position is not eligible for overtime compensation unless it is non-exempt.
