The Position

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program provides free income tax preparation to low-to-moderate income individuals and families. IRS-trained volunteers are certified to prepare basic tax returns using online software. The VITA Assistant Site Coordinator provides coordination, organization, and supervision of volunteers for the VITA site. They will also review and approve tax returns. This is a part-time, temporary position from approximately January 2025 through April 2025.


What You Will Do

Oversee the day-to-day operations of the VITA site during tax season (January - April 2025), including but not limited to:

  1. Prepare and file state and federal tax returns using professional tax software.
  2. Act as primary quality reviewer and approve tax returns for submission.
  3. Responsible for assigning returns to tax preparers, tracking return status, contacting customers, and updating and maintaining appropriate log sheets.
  4. Complete required tax law training and obtain necessary certifications, either through online self-study or in-person sessions.
  5. Prepare and manage volunteer schedules.
  6. Strictly adhere to all confidentiality policies and procedures.
  7. Provide technical support to volunteer tax preparers.
  8. Provide customer service to clients, as needed.
  9. Assist with data collection and reporting.
  10. Ensure compliance with IRS and VITA program policies and procedures.
  11. Maintain and monitor on?line customer appointment logs.
  12. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support the VITA program's mission.

The Successful Candidate Must Have

  1. Minimum age of 18 years.
  2. High school diploma, GED, or equivalent educational background.
  3. Availability to work during the site's hours of operation (TBD) from January through April for approximately 24 hours per week.
  4. Must complete IRS self-study training or attend in-person trainings in December/January and pass the following online IRS exams:
    • IRS Volunteer Standards of Conduct Exam
    • Intake/Interview and Quality Review Exam
    • Advanced Tax Preparer Exam
    • Site Coordinator Exam
  5. Previous experience with personal income tax preparation; experience as a VITA volunteer preferred.
  6. Intermediate computer skills and ability to navigate tax preparation software. Familiarity with TaxSlayer software preferred.
  7. Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  8. Excellent customer service skills, including experience working with a diverse client base.
