Job Description

The Health Emerging and Advanced Technologies (HEAT) Division in the Information and Communications Laboratory (ICL) seeks Student Assistant candidates to work as a developer within our group at the Georgia Tech-Atlanta campus. This position would be responsible for working on projects related to health data informatics and health data interoperability. In this role, we expect you to work with a team of FHIR developers, data scientists, and software engineers to craft innovative solutions for problems within public health, or to support clinical health systems and related research.

As a Student Assistant, work opportunities consist of building, deploying, and testing backend solutions that solve real health data and interoperability problems. Projects in our group range from building interoperable backbones for Large Scale Mapping Tools, to defining Sickle Cell Disease phenotypes, to using FHIR to craft proof-of-concept systems, to building FHIR pipelines for mortality data, and so on.


Required Minimum Qualifications

Student Assistant/Research Assistant



  • Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or similar
  • Must be registered for at least 6 credit hours with your university during working semesters
  • 3.0 or higher GPA


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong Java or Python programming skills; SQL (specifically PostgreSQL) desired
  • Experience working with remote teams and the ability to handle multiple responsibilities with rapidly changing priorities and deadlines
  • Experience using code repositories, e.g. git and GitHub
  • Strong analytical skills and ability to learn complex data structure concepts
  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Ability to pick up new information quickly and apply it to tasking
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
  • Interest or coursework in developing rapid prototypes and pilots using HL7 FHIR, SMARTonFHIR, and other industry healthcare IT standards
