We are offering hybrid/remote work ONLY within our footprint states which are: TX, MT, CA, WA, OR and AK.

As a Data Architect at Providence Health Plans you will be integral to the realization of our enterprise data strategy. You will lead the design and development of data solutions that combine all aspects of IS (software, hardware, integration and structure), with a focus on applying architectural and data management best practices. This role will be responsible for understanding and answering questions on our day-to-day data needs, providing leadership and expertise in data transformation, data quality and analytics technologies. This is a player-coach role that will interact with all levels of the enterprise. You will present proposals/updates to governing councils and executive leadership, provide technical vision and direction in alignment with our data and enterprise strategies, and collaborate with the business to ensure alignment of solutions with business and IT goals/objectives. Additionally, you will be working with technical data engineers, analysts, data scientists and developers to design and implement technical solutions that realize our data and enterprise strategy.

Essential Functions:

*Understands the needs of the business- connect with the business partners to understand their strategies and initiatives. Work to understand how existing or new technology can be applied to enable business capabilities. Influence our business partners to make responsible technical decisions that provide maximum benefits and efficiency while keeping risk manageable. Promote the practice of business process modeling. Aligns solutions with financial, timeline and resource boundaries.

*Collaborate and Consult with the development teams to facilitate the creation of technical solutions that efficiently address the business needs and are complementary to Providence's overall technical directions. Accountable for project deliverables using agile project management methodologies and agile SDLC. Can effectively break down initiatives/epics into features and stories that are ready to be developed by Agile teams. Collaborates and mentors Agile teams to develop recommended solutions.

*Understand our technology partners- Maintain working relationships with key technology partners to understand their technical directions. Engage in mutual influence of strategies and technical roadmaps. Help ensure that PHP is getting the best leverage from our investments.

*Understand our Healthcare Industry- Keep abreast of the healthcare industry developments and trends. Understand how PHP can leverage industry knowledge and tools. Research new technologies where appropriate and facilitate their introduction into the organization through educational efforts and proof of concept activities.

*Create and maintain technical standards and guidelines that embody best practices to guide PHP IS in the creation of consistent and efficient deliverables. Participate and contribute to the PHP architecture community of practice. Drive the adoption of standard toolsets with and participate in Software Development practices that complement Providence's technical strategies and goals.

*Create prototype applications and frameworks that prove out and illustrate best practices. Where appropriate facilitate the creation of frameworks that serve to drive consistency and efficiency in applying standards and best practices. Create frameworks and models that can be reused and embody architectural data strategies and standards. Identify and design re-usable data services.

*Create detailed deliverables needed to support the selection, purchase, and deployment of solutions for PHP, including the participation in the development of cost estimates, request for proposals and total cost of ownership models.

*Review Project & Product Designs and implementation artifacts to ensure data best practices and standards are observed, including data models, schemas and data APIs.

*Review operational processes and procedures to ensure that they are consistent with service and performance levels required to satisfy the data needs of the business. Participate in bandwidth and performance testing to insure that operational service levels can be satisfied. Ensure solutions are designed with scalability, maintainability, security, and reliability in mind.

*Share experiences and concepts with leadership, Agile and project team members. Ensure technical data direction is communicated clearly in architecture roadmaps and strategies. Ensure data architecture standards and guidelines drive implementation decisions at the project level. Understand what is working and what needs improvement, thereby engaging in continuous improvement and optimization of tools, technology and architecture

Share technical information with our business partners in a meaningful way in order to communicate the current capabilities and limitations of technology. Bring forth ideas to help the business get maximum value from technical investments.

Additional Responsibilities:



  • Create and maintain roadmaps that illustrate the current as-is state and desired future state (3-5 yr horizon) of PHP technical environments. Connect business strategies and needed data capabilities to the roadmap, and provide high-level milestone view of the cadence needed to move from the current state to future state.
  • Consult on the processes and tools related to the software development life-cycle to ensure that architectural data standards and processes are included.
  • Share technical information and directions with other technical leads and architects across PHP and Providence; foster the community. Learn and understand the inter-connections and interdependencies between business areas and technical platforms. Influence the development of a consistent data architecture and governance methodology for PHP.
  • Develop architecture diagrams, mapping documents, crosswalks, data models and other artifacts that help capture data needs, requirements and solutions within and across projects.
  • Provide mentorship to development and technical teams, playing the role of player-coach to facilitate growth and learning.

Required Qualifications:



  • Bachelor's Degree preferably in Computer Science or Information Systems.
  • 8 years in engineering or business systems analysis, preferably to include work supporting more than one business process/area.
  • 8 years Full-life-cycle application development experience.
  • 6 years experience in building multi-tier applications using (applicable skill set here such as Java or .NET, this will vary).
  • Enterprise Scaled Agile development experience.


Preferred Qualifications:



  • Healthcare industry experience.
  • Team leadership or team management experience.
  • Experience prototyping and performance tuning applications deployed across multiple operating systems, languages and computing platforms.
  • Cloud development and deployment experience.
  • Experience in using ETL/ELT tools
  • Deep knowledge and experience with SQL
  • Experience in "utility" programming
  • Experience in developing dynamic dashboards and reports.
  • Experience developing cloud based data solutions, including infrastructure, devops/datops integration, big data technologies, and data science and analytics solutions.
  • Experience architecting and developing data solutions in Snowflake.
