Position Description

  • Employee must be able to operate within analytical/scientific method or standard operating procedures in both the coal preparation area and the central fuels lab. Must apply experience and skills to both prepare and analyze routine coal samples using established procedures or scientific method. Employee is expected to work in a team environment with limited degree of supervision and communicate effectively and professionally.


  • Essential Job Tasks:
  • Responsible for laboratory analysis of samples from a variety of customers in a range of matrices including but not limited to coal, ash, limestone, and gypsum.
  • Performs analysis from start to finish.
  • Works in collaboration with other Fuels lab personnel to ensure samples are completed and reported within required two week turn around time.
  • Undergoes quarterly check chemistry evaluations to ensure all lab standard operating procedures and ASTM methods to prepare and analyze all samples generated in the Central Fuels Lab are being followed.
  • Participates in LQSI Round Robin Program to ensure that lab is providing accurate and reliable results to our customers.
  • Must achieve an overall ranking of 50 percentile or greater.
  • Responsible for preventative and routine maintenance on sixteen different pieces of equipment to ensure continuous operation.
  • Troubleshoots, identifies, and corrects maintenance issues on equipment.
  • Responsible for assigned collateral duty designated by supervisor.
  • Assists with safety training needed for Fuels Lab Personnel, Zero OSHA recordable injuries and Zero preventable motor vehicle accidents.
  • Serves as backup to perform safety audits in the absence of the supervisor.


  • Position Requirements

    Lab Tech A
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related scientific field from an accredited university + 4 years experience, Associate's Degree in Natural or Technical Science + 6 years experience or High School Diploma/or GED + 12 years experience.


  • Compensation Information:
    $32.65 - $40.80 (min. - mid.)

    Lab Tech B
  • Bachelor's Degree in Biology, Chemistry or other related scientific field from an accredited university, Associate's Degree in Natural or Technical Science + 3 years experience or High School Diploma/or GED and + 5 years experience.


  • Compensation Information:
    $26.45 - $33.05 (min. - mid.)

    Lab Tech C
  • Associate's Degree in Natural or Technical Science or High School Diploma/or GED + 2 years experience.


  • Compensation Information:
    $21.55 - $26.90 (min. - mid.)
