Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The goal of the UNC Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention ( HPDP) is to prevent chronic disease and reduce health disparities. Investigators and staff at HPDP work with communities to conduct research, provide training and translate research findings into policy and practice. Research areas include nutrition and physical activity, cardiovascular health, diabetes, obesity, healthy food access, cancer prevention and control, children's health, rural health, and health equity. HPDP is part of a network of 23 CDC Prevention Research Centers across the United States.
Position Summary
THIS POSTING IS FOR TWO IDENTICAL POSITIONS ( POSITION NUMBERS 20047224 AND 20064669). BY APPLYING, YOU WILL BE CONSIDERED FOR BOTH AVAILABLE POSITIONS.

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.

The UNC Community Health and Wellness Resource ( CHWR) team is offering a research internship for undergraduate students interested in public health. The CHWR team conducts innovative research designed to support caregivers and those in their care through equitable, innovative strategies that promote health and wellness. The purpose of the internship is to provide hands-on research experience for an undergraduate student who may be interested in a career in public health.

Research Interns with the CHWRG can expect the following:

- High-quality, short-term work experience
- 8 to12 week Summer internship appointment
- 20-30 hour work week
- Professional development opportunities including participation in professional development workshops
- One-on-one mentoring from senior staff at various stages of the research process
- Potential to network with researchers outside the CHWRG and area of expertise
- Seminars from researchers and/or public health organizations
- Experience conducting public health research and engagement with researchers working across multiple projects

Current CHWRG research projects the Research Intern may have the opportunity to engage with include:

- Senior Living Physical Activity Support: Goal - Develop evidence-based practices for implementing physical activity in senior living settings.

- Light Sensors for Measuring Young Children's Screen Time: Goal - Assist with data entry and possible data collection orientation

- Social-Emotional Learning in Child Care: Goal - Identify strategies for positive social-emotional learning in child care settings.

- Motor Skill Development in Child Care: Goal - Identify strategies for positive motor skill development in child care settings.

- Weight-Related Health Promotion for Child Care Staff: Goal - Assist in developing weight management content for child care professionals.

- Go NAPSACC - National Dissemination Model: Goal - Evaluate a national effort to improve environmental quality in child care settings.

- Resilience and Physical Activity Programs for Child Care Staff: Goal - Assist in developing resilience and physical activity content for child care professionals

- Health Promotion for Families with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities ( IDD): Goal - Conduct formative research with families of young children (0-6 years old) with IDD.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
This internship is designed for full-time undergraduate students. Undergraduate students who will graduate prior to the summer of employment are not eligible.

- Students must reside in the U.S. throughout their internship. International students who are planning to live in the U.S. during the summer of 2024 are eligible to apply. Any applicant who does not plan to live in the United States during the summer is not eligible for hire in the 2025 cycle.

- Students must be able to complete some of their work in-person at the CHWR offices (1700 MLK Jr. Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC 27514).
