Job Summary

The Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery is recruiting an Assistant Clinical Research Coordinator (ACRC) for the Children's Communication Center (CCC).

Under the supervision of a Clinical Research Supervisor, the incumbent will perform entry-level duties related to the support and coordination of clinical research and outreach activities and may receive training and development to prepare and advance for journey-level work at the next level within the series.

Duties will include, but will not be limited to the following:

  1. Assistance with coordination and in-person participation in on-site and off-site CCC clinical research and outreach activities.
  2. Database management and data entry while maintaining data quality
  3. Review of medical charts and electronic records to extract medical information and other data for use in studies
  4. Help with the recruitment, enrollment, registration, scheduling, and retention of study participants
  5. Assistance to research personnel to keep patients on study schedules
  6. Administrative support for research study activity (including working with the UCSF Committee for Human Research and other regulatory agencies)
  7. Performance of other duties as assigned

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $28.48 - $45.80 (Hourly Rate).

Department Description

The UCSF Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery (ONHS) at the University of California, San Francisco is a recognized leader in clinical care, research, and education. The Department of ONHS consists 9 clinical divisions performing ~83,000 procedures including General Otolaryngology; Pediatric Otolaryngology; Head & Neck Oncologic Surgery & Endocrine Surgery; Laryngology; Otology, Neurotology, & Skull Base Surgery; Rhinology & Sinus Surgery; Facial Plastics & Reconstructive Surgery; Sleep Surgery; and Audiology. Outpatient and inpatient clinical activities are performed across 7 sites across the SF Bay area - Mt. Zion, Mission Bay, Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Zuckerberg San Francisco General, San Francisco VA, Redwood Shores, and Berkeley Outpatient Clinic. The Department of OHNS also consists of 5 research laboratories with ~$11M in sponsored research revenue in FY24/FY25 - Coleman Memorial Laboratory, Speech Neuroscience Laboratory, Epstein Laboratories, Head & Neck Cancer Research, and Skull Base and Cerebrovascular Lab.

The department consists of approximately 50 faculty members and 105 non-faculty academic and staff employees, including postdocs, visiting scholar's clinical volunteers, emeritus faculty and staff volunteers, 25 residents & 4 fellows, with a total expenditure budget of ~$44 million. The department has experienced rapid growth and has increased faculty by >20% in the last 4 years. Additional recruitment and lab expansions are planned over the next three years.

Required Qualifications


  • HS graduation and sufficient experience and demonstrated skills to successfully perform the assigned duties and responsibilities; and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • Computer experience: Microsoft applications, FileMaker pro, REDCap, video and photo editing software
  • Demonstrate attention to detail, complete projects on time, prioritize multiple tasks to meet deadlines, collaborate effectively with team members, adapt to changing priorities, and communicate clearly

Preferred Qualifications


  • 1-3 years of experience working with children ages 0-18 years in a classroom or clinical setting
  • At least 1 year of experience working with deaf/hard-of-hearing children and their families
  • Proficiency in a second language (Spanish or Cantonese)
  • Fluency in the usage of Committee of Human Research (CHR) online iMEDris system for submission, renewal, and modification of protocols through this system.
  • Understanding the patient population to create rapport and a relationship while also giving insight into what is realistic and appropriate for patient participation.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Experience with REDCap database structure, maintenance, management and/or creation
  • Knowledge of UCSF and departmental policies for dealing with reimbursement, guidelines for research, confidentiality and HIPPA regulations, following the UCSF mission statement and purpose for research, and a clear understanding of policies and procedures on patient safety and confidentiality (electronic and hard copy medical records, patient charts, communication, etc.); knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines, guidelines for packing/shipping infectious substances, database building/analysis, and data management within some of the following: Access, Stata, SASS/ SPSS, and Teleform programming platforms.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, research policies and guidelines
  • Prior experience as a teacher of children with special needs
  • Experience applying the following regulations and guidelines:
    • Good Clinical Practice Guidelines
    • Health Information and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
    • The Protection of Human Research Subjects
    • CHR regulations for recruitment and consent of research subjects
    • Effective Cash Handling Procedures
    • Environmental Health and Safety Training
    • Fire Safety Training
