Purpose

The Lead Fire Inspector is responsible for overseeing the fire inspections team to ensure compliance with fire safety codes and regulations. This role involves coordinating and supervising fire inspections and fire drills, scheduling and managing fire inspections staff for special events, reviewing and approving permits, engaging in public education and outreach, and investigating fire incidents. The Lead Fire Inspector plays a critical role in protecting lives and property at The University of Texas at Austin.

Responsibilities
  • Assists with maintaining records regarding inspections, investigations, and equipment inventory. Performs related duties as required.
  • Coordinate resources and personnel related to university special events and venues that house large assembly occupancies to ensure public safety. Manage staff scheduling and liaise with the university's fire alarm shop to coordinate system disablement for fire watch duties during performances.
  • Engages in public education and outreach: Delivers informative sessions, workshops, and community gatherings to educate individuals on fire prevention, safety protocols, and readiness for emergencies. Creates educational resources like brochures and videos to enhance awareness and understanding of fire safety practices.
  • Examines, offers feedback on, and authorizes relevant permit applications. Coordinate with CSUs to ensure safety guidelines are followed.
  • Identify potential fire hazards, such as obstructed exits, defective wiring, improper storage of flammable materials, or insufficient fire suppression systems. Evaluate these hazards' risks and propose corrective measures to reduce or eliminate them.
  • In the event of a fire, conduct investigations to determine the cause, origin, and circumstances surrounding the incident. Gathers evidence, interviews witnesses, and collaborates with other agencies, such as fire departments and law enforcement, to determine if any code violations or criminal activities contributed to the fire.
  • Oversee all aspects of existing contracts with vendors offering fire extinguisher maintenance services. Generate purchase orders for both maintenance services and replacement fire extinguishers. Solicit quotes from vendors to ensure current pricing accuracy. Monitor expenses and ensure timely payment of invoices.
  • Oversee a team comprising four full-time FPS staff and four part-time employees dedicated to special events. Manage their performance, conduct, and task assignments. Conducts annual performance reviews, approves timesheets, and handles leave requests for team members.
  • Play a crucial role in upholding fire safety standards. Responsibilities involve conducting regular inspections of buildings, facilities, and public areas to verify adherence to fire safety codes, regulations, and guidelines. Tasked with promptly identifying and addressing fire code violations and other safety concerns. These inspections will encompass various aspects such as fire exits, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and other firefighting equipment and systems.
  • Review detailed investigative reports of fire inspections performed and fire code violations observed, initiate procedures to obtain compliance, and meet with building managers to develop a plan to resolve violations.
  • Serve as the main liaison for external pyrotechnics firms engaged in university special events. Approve pyrotechnics permits, assess licenses, and verify sufficient insurance coverage as per university regulations. Review safety plans to ensure compliance with NFPA 1126 and NFPA 160 standards.
  • Supervises inspections of properties and facilities to evaluate fire life safety issues. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.
Required Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field related to fire science technology or engineering studies or High School Diploma/GED with four years of experience in fire service, fire inspections, building trades, code enforcement, or related technical fields. Experience in conducting fire life safety inspections based on NFPA 101 Life Safety Code. Current certification as a fire inspector by a nationally recognized fire standards organization.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to fire science technology or engineering studies. NFPA Certified Fire Inspector I. Basic fire inspector certification by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection. Experience in plan review/blueprint interpretation. Completion of NFPA 1031, Professional Qualifications for Fire Inspector and Plan Examiner. Completion of NFPA 1035, Standard for Professional Qualifications for Fire and Life Safety Educator, Public Information Officer and Juvenile Fire Setter Intervention. Public education/teaching experience over a broad range of audience type.

Driving Required

This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.

Salary Range

$70,000 + depending on qualifications
