About Microbiology

Quality Control is an essential function of the pharmaceutical industry. Drug manufacturers must thoroughly test materials, processes, equipment, techniques, environments, and personnel to ensure their final products are consistent, safe, effective, and predictable. The Tolmar Microbiology team is a part of the Quality team and is responsible for monitoring environments, equipment, and materials to ensure they meet purity specifications.

Proposed Work Description

The nature of business is that priorities can shift according to the needs of the company/department. Therefore, the work described below is a sampling of the kinds of work we expect this position to entail:



  • Environmental monitoring reads, data entry/review
  • WFI and purified water sampling
  • Preparation of media
  • Quality control of purchased media
  • Autoclave of lab supplies for testing
  • Records retention processes
  • General laboratory maintenance at the Centre, Research, and Windsor laboratories
  • Assist Microbiologists with testing
  • Sub-culturing of QC organisms
  • Assist with projects (Development team activates, Notebook studies, Sterility Testing Lab, MODA, Contamination Control, Training)


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities



  • Basic knowledge of laboratory principles and procedures.
  • An interest in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Effective organization and attention to detail.
  • Ability to interact collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organization and time management skills.
  • Proficient computer skills with demonstrated experience in working with Microsoft Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook).

Education & Experience



  • Pursuing a college- or graduate-level degree in a related scientific field (i.e., biology, microbiology, molecular biology, etc.)
  • Have completed a microbiology course with a lab.
  • Have an interest in the pharmaceutical industry.


Working Conditions



  • Work is performed primarily in a laboratory environment but could include office, clean room, or production floor.


Compensation and Benefits



  • Base rate is $19.00 per hour
  • Benefits include medical insurance and 401k participation
