About the Opportunity:

The On-Call Vessel Operator is tasked with the safe and effective navigation and operation of SFOMF's 28-ft Harbor Security Vessels and the 48-ft R/V Nelson. Operators support planned and emergency response projects on an as-needed basis, including deployment, retrieval, and handling of oceanographic equipment and serving as range clearance vessels during UEM Trials.
The Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division's South Florida Ocean Measurement Facility (SFOMF) is located on the south side of Port Everglades inlet in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This site has housed an active, continuously operating Navy range for more than 50 years. SFOMF is a member of the Naval Sea Systems Command team and falls under the cognizance of the Naval Surface Warfare Center.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:



  • Ensure all safety and job-related equipment is in good working order. Report issues immediately to the Seaward Services, Inc. Project Manager or SFOMF Waterfront Manager.
  • Safely and effectively guide clients and crew during vessel operations, including deploying/retrieving oceanographic equipment, conducting survey and calibration runs, and serving as range clearance vessels during UEM Trials.
  • Understand and comply with all company and client safety standards.
  • Perform fieldwork under the direction of US Navy Project Managers with limited supervision, often in varying environmental conditions.
  • Ensure the safe operation of US Navy and other required equipment.
  • Demonstrate practical knowledge of all phases of shipboard safety procedures and knowledge of location and use of all firefighting and safety equipment
  • Ensure all personnel have proper PPE
  • Ensure all inspections by the USCG meet the standards
  • Ensure vessel always maintains a COI inspection ready condition
  • Develop strong relationships with appropriate crewmembers and represent the Company at external meetings as required.
  • Assure quality workmanship and performance by crewmembers.
  • Additional job duties as assigned.


Requirements & Qualifications:



  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2-5 years in the maritime industry operating small craft preferred.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Minimum USCG License Rating of 100 GT.
  • Proficient in operating GPS, VHF, and US Navy communication equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to safely and proficiently operate SFOMF vessels and other required equipment.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must pass pre-employment background checks and drug screening.


Salary: $500/day
