This is a seasonal non-union hourly position, grade SEA06 with an expected hiring range of $27.75 to $29.29 per hour. This position contributes to the success of Brookfield Zoo Chicago ("BZC") by providing services, including asset protection and medical aid, to assure a safe environment for employees, guests and animals, contributing to BZC's goals of providing extraordinary guest experiences and assuring overall financial sustainability.

PRIMARY JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. * This position serves as an armed Police Officer, performing patrol duties to ensure the safety and security of guests, employees, facilities, and the animal collection. Follow BZC and department safety and procedural rules.
  2. * Enforce park rules and regulations at the state, federal and local levels. Prepare field reports and required paperwork in accordance with established department procedures. Maintain work area and equipment in clean and functional condition in accordance with department standards.
  3. * Assists with traffic direction and general patrol of the park, including parking lots, and related duties.
  4. * Pick-up from and deliver monies to various park locations, collect revenue from various machines/donation boxes or other sources throughout the park and deliver same to Cash Control, complete appropriate documentation for money bag and revenue pick-up tracking.
  5. * Promote a positive and professional public image in all interactions with guests and staff. Respond to inquiries and requests for information promptly.
  6. * Monitor facilities, parking, and adjacent properties for safety, hazards, and security.
  7. * Provide assistance in law enforcement and other assigned activities to local community police departments as requested.
  8. Other related duties as assigned.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:



  • Associate of Arts degree in Criminal Justice or other relevant field or four years of equivalent experience required.
  • High school diploma or educational equivalent (e.g., GED.)
  • Two years of relevant security or loss prevention experience required.
  • Must attend and complete the next available State of Illinois 40 Hour Police Firearms Training Program.
  • Must attend and obtain certification from the State of Illinois Full Time or Part Time Police Officer Certification Program within one year from date of hire.
  • Valid Firearms Owners Identification ("FOID") Card required at time of hire.
  • Ability to work with and around trained K9s.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • English fluency at a professional working proficiency required.
  • Cultural competency; experience and/or ability to work and interact effectively with a diverse, multicultural audience.
  • A valid driver's license is required at time of hire. Illinois residents must possess a valid Illinois driver's license or obtain one within 90 days of hire. A valid out-of-state driver's license is required for out-of-state residents.



DESIRABLE/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Completion of the State of Illinois 40 Hr. Police Firearms Training Program preferred.
  • A State of Illinois Full Time or Part Time Police Officer Certification preferred.
  • One year police officer experience preferred.
  • Multilingual ability, Spanish fluency a plus.



ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

This position description summarizes the primary duties and functions of this position, but should not be considered a complete listing of every duty the incumbent may ever be called upon to perform. Incumbent is expected to gain an understanding of BZC's mission and vision and work to achieve the goals of Public Safety and the institution. Must represent BZC in a professional manner at all times. Police K9s may be housed and may operate out of the Policy Department building. These dogs are trained K9s that are approachable, friendly, and socially trained to work with staff and guests. As the dogs spend time in and around the Police Department building, canine shedding and dander are always present. This is a temporary position working approximately 20 hours per week, including weekdays, weekends, evenings, and holidays as assigned.

Brookfield Zoo Chicago has partnered with Project Dragonfly at Miami University of Ohio to bring an exciting Master's degree program to the Chicagoland area. The Advanced Inquiry Program (AIP) is an inquiry-driven learning experience, allowing participants to take classes from Miami University faculty. Enrollment is open to applicants with a bachelor's degree, regardless of academic major or profession. This program is designed for teachers and other education professionals.



BZC University



The Zoo offers a variety of training, both on-site and via virtual classes and e-learning through Brookfield Zoo Chicago University at no cost to employees, including professional development, skill-building courses, conservation topics, zoo and animal-related topics, safety, leadership development, wellness, and much more. Instructors include guest speakers, staff presenters, and outside trainers.



Tuition Reimbursement



Regular, full-time non-union employees who have at least one year of seniority are eligible to apply for reimbursement of tuition expenses to a maximum of $1,000 per calendar year.



Access Credit Union



Employees are eligible immediately upon employment to participate in the credit union. The minimum balance is $5. Savings are insured up to $100,000, and savings accounts, new and used car loans, personal loans, student loans, and much more are available.

Several staff are commissioned Notary Publics and provide free notary services to BZC staff.



Freebie Table




Consistent with our conservation ethic, we have a "Freebie" table where staff can place unused/unwanted items that still have value for other staff members to claim. This has been a great way to recycle/upcycle by making unused items available to others.



Little Free Library: Take a Book. Share a Book.




The Zoo has a "Little Free Library" book exchange. If an employee sees a book they would like to read, they can take it, or they may donate a book they have finished. When they are done, they can return it to the Little Free Library or leave it at another Little Free Library location for others to enjoy.



Zoo Day Camp Discount




Zoo staff who register their child(ren) for Summer Camp at Brookfield Zoo Chicago receive a discounted price for a week of camp for each child registered. The discount is limited to immediate family members only (grandchildren included). Lunch and T-shirts are not discounted.



Zoo Discounts




Employee discounts are available on BZC gift shop and restaurant purchases, including 25 cent drinks when the Zoo-issued drink cup is used.
