THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

As a Corrections Refrigeration Mechanic Trade Instructor, you will be responsible for providing structured on-the-job training and instruction to inmates in the refrigeration mechanic trade during their vocational training. This training is aimed at promoting their employability upon their reintegration into the community. Your duties will include supervising and instructing inmates during both classroom and on-the-job training and work assignments. You will also be responsible for the care, custody, and control of inmates during their training and work assignments. Work orders will be provided to you, along with diagrams, sketches, or blueprints, and it will be your responsibility to independently determine the procedures, tools, equipment, and materials to be used by inmates to successfully complete their assignments. Your work will be overseen and reviewed by a technical or administrative supervisor through conferences, reports, and inspections of completed assignments to ensure industry and trade competency is being met.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • This position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable. Selected candidates who are new to employment with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania will begin employment at the starting annual salary of $50,846.00 (before taxes).

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Five years of experience in the repair and servicing of refrigeration systems or air conditioning systems; or
  • Completion of an approved apprenticeship in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year of journey level work in the refrigeration or air conditioning mechanic trade.

Special Requirement:

  • This position requires the possession of an active Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certificate issued by an approved provider.

Other Requirements:

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
