Job Description Summary

Under general supervision, the Bartender is responsible for leading the services of a la carte, conference dining, and special event functions. Assists in the training and development of the service and Bartending team.

Job Description

Essential Functions:

  • Sets up, provides service, and breaks down the bars for Special Events and banquets.

  • Mixes and serves drinks following standard recipes.

  • Maintains the cleanliness and appearance of all bars.

  • Is familiar with menu items, liquor brands, beers, and non-alcoholic selections available.

  • Cleans bar area equipment, tools, and supplies and maintains equipment in good working order.

  • Serves guest food and beverages, following fine dining standards, in a friendly and courteous manner.

  • Pulls liquor, sets up, bartends, and breaks down special events and banquet bars as needed.

  • Reviews Banquet Event Orders (BEO) for directions and changes.

  • Relays any customer complaints, regardless of magnitude to the shift supervisor.

  • Inspects food and products from the kitchen for quality.

  • Sets up dining tables in the Grille area. Checks to see that all items are appropriately placed. Ensures that the silver and glassware are spotless, salt and pepper shakers are filled, and the sugar packet holders are clean and neatly arranged. Folds napkins.

  • Maintains cleanliness of the alcohol storage area(s) and assists with inventory counts to maintain par levels.

  • Maintains a formal, professional, and courteous image with guests at all times.

Required Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • High school diploma or GED and one year related bartending experience in the hospitality industry or restaurant environment, or an equivalent combination of experience and education.

  • 21 years of age.

  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and time management skills.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English.

  • Ability to maintain effective customer relations; ability to present and display professional demeanor at all times.

  • Ability to "up-sell" items.

  • Ability to present, open, and pour wine; knowledge of fine dining etiquette.

  • Working knowledge of beer, wine, liquor, and common drink recipes.

  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Ability to operate golf carts and vans; ability to meet the requirements of the University's automobile insurance.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the Micros operating system.

Accountabilities:

  • Responsible for own work and help in the supervision of other bartenders.

  • Accountable for Grille Room and Event sales and inventory control.

Physical Requirements:

  • Medium work; climbing, crouching, standing, walking, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing.

  • Visual acuity to determine neatness and thoroughness of work assignments.

Environmental Conditions:

  • Subject to both inside and outside activities.
