Position Summary

The Population Health Innovation Lab (PHIL) at the Public Health institute (PHI) designs, catalyzes, and accelerates innovative approaches that advance health, well-being, and equity. Under the direction of PHIL's Associate Director of Applied Research and Implementation, the Research Associate supports the execution and implementation of scientific research, evaluation, training, and technical assistance projects. Major activities include data collection and analysis, participant outreach and recruitment, research support, and providing assistance in the design and implementation of training and technical assistance efforts across PHIL projects.

This is a fully remote, U.S.-based, regular full-time position. Applicants should be equipped to work from home with reliable internet and computer access. The incumbent is required to work during business hours in their time zone.

Full pay range for this position: $25.86 to $36.40 per hour. The typical hiring range for this position is from $25.86 (minimum) to $31.13 (midpoint) per hour. The starting wage is determined based on the candidate's knowledge, skills, experience, as well as budget availability.



Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The Research Associate will be responsible for supporting diverse aspects of PHIL projects. Key responsibilities include:

Research and Evaluation:



  • Collects quantitative and qualitative data using a variety of techniques, including questionnaire, interview, focus group, meeting observation, document/website review, web scraping, and identification of secondary data sources. May develop data collection instruments with guidance from senior research staff.
  • Compiles, manipulates, and manages data, including ensuring data security and data quality.
  • Visualizes quantitative and qualitative data using a variety of techniques.






      • Preferred experience using data visualization tools such as PowerBI, Kumu, ArcGIS Online, Qualtrics reports, and Canva.




  • Contributes to report development, including infographics, brief reports, summary reports, and manuscripts for book chapters or scientific journal publications.
  • Participates in grant writing and reporting.


Training and Technical Assistance:



  • Supports the development of materials, tools, and protocols to facilitate technical assistance efforts.
  • Assists in the creation of interactive dashboards and other tools to enhance the application of research findings in training contexts.


Collaboration and Team Support:



  • Works collaboratively with team members to design and implement protocols.
  • Provides feedback on products developed by team members and responds to guidance offered by senior-level team members to ensure high-quality project deliverables.


Other Duties:



  • Complete other tasks as assigned.



Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social science or quantitative field, or substitute with four years of related experience.


Other Qualifications

  • A high level of PC literacy, including a broad knowledge of Microsoft Office software (MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access).
  • Ability to work with spreadsheets and database applications.
  • Familiarity with statistical procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct data analysis and interpret findings.
  • Excellent analytical, verbal, written, and critical thinking skills.
  • Follows standard operating procedures, protocols, and quality controls according to established methods.
  • Strong time management skills and an ability to meet deadlines, both prescribed and self-imposed.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively with team members.
  • Ability to progress on several projects concurrently.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in data analysis in a research setting using various quantitative and qualitative methods.
  • Experience with statistical analysis software.
  • Experience collecting primary data (quantitative and qualitative) with surveys, interviews, and/or focus groups.
  • Understanding of research and evaluation concepts and approaches.
