This posting is for a power engineer who will be responsible for providing engineering management and technical support to the Power Department, including the steam and electrical distribution systems, at the Hartsville Paper Mill. The Power Engineer will play a vital role in ensuring equipment reliability and availability, identifying and implementing processes and projects that will improve efficiency, and supporting other department personnel to meet the goals of Power Department and Paper Mill.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Maintains a personal commitment to safety and works to ensure an injury-free environment and safety first work force.
  • Provides engineering/technical support in the identification, analysis, and resolution of issues within the Power Plant, steam distribution system and electrical distribution system.
  • Develops and employs effective oral and written communication skills. Ensures that equipment/component health issues are communicated to key stakeholders and management. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Responsible for technical studies and recommendations to improve operational efficiency, equipment reliability, and production operation up time.
  • Keeps informed of technological advances in the field of power plant operation and engineering, maintains current information on major developments including EPA and SCDHEC emission requirements, and ensures that such information is made available to appropriate personnel.
  • Manages Power Department capital program by preparing CAA's, coordinating with Paper Division Engineers and serving as project manager as appropriate.
  • Supports the Plant Maintenance department with development and execution of the preventive maintenance program for all equipment.
  • Updates plant CMMS and engineering files with drawings, specifications, technical files, bill of materials, and equipment histories.
  • Schedules and coordinates equipment installation and repair with the Plant Maintenance Department and outside contractors
  • Supports maintenance and operations with preparing detailed maintenance outage schedules and coordinates outside contractor/vendor activities during the outage.
  • Identifies and initiates actions to maintain long term equipment reliability of department assets.
  • Supports troubleshooting, evaluates equipment degradation issues, coordinates component reliability improvements, and employs Preventive Maintenance, Condition-Based Maintenance, and Predictive Maintenance techniques
  • Provides engineering/technical guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in area of expertise.
  • Supports preparation of normal operational and emergency response plans
  • Prepares monthly asset availability reports
  • Leader of the Power Department 5S and Daily Team Maintenance (DTM) pillars
  • Provides technical support for department operators and directs shift operations as required.
  • Participates in the plant weekend on-call support rotation (2-4 weekends per year) and is required to respond to emergency situations on nights and weekends to support issues with-in the department.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as assigned.

Required Experience:

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical, Mechanical or Chemical Engineering from an ABET accredited program.
  • Experience with major power plant equipment (boilers, turbine generators) and associated auxiliaries.
  • Experience with project engineering and project management.
  • Understanding of basic practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Understanding of asset reliability and maintenance practices and procedures.
  • Basic understanding of high voltage (15kV) electrical distribution equipment and systems.
  • Years of Experience: 2 to 10 Years
  • Level of Education: 4 Year Degree
