HJF is seeking a Scientist I in the Department of Radiology & Bioengineering with advanced image post-processing and analysis skills to develop and conduct research projects and assist on a variety of imaging projects that the Radiology Department supports. The Scientist I would be responsible primarily for MRI. The Department of Radiology & Bioengineering has an advanced high-gradient 3T head only research MRI system called MAGNUS for human and phantom imaging. In addition, the Department has a large Preclinical imaging core and post processing area that supports MRI, positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission tomography (SPECT), optical imaging and CT. The Scientist I will work primarily with the human MRI system with opportunities to work on a variety of imaging projects.

This position will be in support of the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences at the Uniformed Services University (USU). Dr. Hood is the Director of the Biomedical Research Imaging Core (BRIC), a preclinical imaging laboratory of the Department of Radiology that supports small animal research for USU. She is also one of the scientists that supported the acquisition and early brain research on the human MAGNUS MRI System. This position would support the MAGNUS research project to assess advanced brain imaging and correlate findings to advanced heart MRI, CT imaging, and other biomarker data.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the documentation of all imaging procedures as well as the details of the post processing pipelines.
  • Processes and interprets experimental data. Formulates experimental hypotheses and designs experimental protocols.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Participates in conversations with investigators and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • Trains and supervises laboratory technicians, as needed.
  • Prepares written reports, abstracts, and manuscripts for submission to scientific journals and conferences.
  • Coordinates and contributes to new grant and funding applications.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.
  • May participate or work with other imaging modalities as opportunities arise.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctorate Degree required.
  • Minimum of 2-5 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Experience and knowledge advanced post-processing algorithms and a variety of imaging and statistical software.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a T1/Public Trust background check.

Physical Capabilities

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods
  • Ability to climb, pull, and lift heavy objects

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in a laboratory setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $73,800-$90,000 Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
