Summary: The Laboratory Animal Clinical Veterinarian will provide expert veterinary clinical, surgical, and research support across containment and non-containment animal care areas, including Quarantine, Barrier, ABSL-2, ABSL-3, and ABSL-4 facilities. This role involves routine and non-routine clinical care, research collaboration, and oversight of laboratory animals housed at customer site. The veterinarian will support the customer mission through professional and technical expertise in laboratory animal medicine. Schedule: Primarily 0800-1630, Variable hours to include weekends, holidays, and emergencies as requested.
Responsibilities
Essential Job Functions:
- Clinical and Surgical Care:
- Perform clinical medicine services, including physical exams, diagnosis, treatment, and surgery, for all laboratory animal species housed at Customer site.
- Provide veterinary professional support during experimental and non-experimental periods in compliance with SOPs and protocols.
- Interpret clinical pathology results, imaging studies, and prognoses for diseases and injuries, and prescribe treatments.
- Maintain detailed documentation of clinical activities in animal medical records using the SOAP format.
- Operational Support:
- Assist with reviewing SOPs, preparing for oversight visits, and addressing inspection remarks.
- Ensure compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) regulations where applicable.
- Review pending animal studies, assess resource needs, and ensure appropriate support is in place.
- Personnel Training and Supervision:
- Provide guidance and training to veterinary technicians and animal caretakers regarding treatments and follow-up procedures.
- Conduct training for government personnel on topics such as animal observation, safe work practices, and husbandry procedures in research environments.
- Program Compliance and Reporting:
- Enroll in and comply with the Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) and Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP).
- Promptly report changes in health status, injuries, or illnesses to the appropriate authorities.
- Ensure proper record-keeping and compliance with regulatory requirements for veterinary licenses.
- Professional Development and Collaboration:
- Attend continuing education programs sufficient to maintain licensure and certifications.
- Conduct market research and review scientific literature to provide recommendations for new equipment, supplies, and procedures.
- Travel locally (within a 75-mile radius) to observe and develop innovative approaches for animal care.
- Equipment and Supply Management:
- Notify the Contract PM of required medical equipment, supplies, and instruments.
- Ensure proper maintenance and safe operation of medical equipment and supplies.
- Surge Capability:
- Respond to increased service demands during mission surges, ensuring quality and efficiency of operations.
Qualifications
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Broad knowledge of veterinary medical practices and principles, particularly as they relate to laboratory animal medicine.
- Familiarity with common laboratory procedures, experimental techniques, and drug interactions in animal models.
- Excellent time management and communication skills.
- Comfortable in the following work environment:
- Work involves prolonged periods in auditory and physical isolation, including ABSL-3 and ABSL-4 containment areas.
- Exposure to hazardous infectious agents, biohazards, and other laboratory risks.
- Physical duties include standing, walking, lifting up to 50 pounds, and handling animals in various containment environments
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree.
- Current, unrestricted U.S. state veterinary license.
- If the veterinary degree is from a non-AVMA-accredited institution, an Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG) certification is required.
- Enrollment in Controlled Substance Personnel Reliability Program (CS-PRP) within one month of start date.
- Enrollment in Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) within one month of start date.
- At least three (3) years of experience in laboratory animal clinical medicine and surgery.
- Experience supporting non-human primates (NHPs) in a research setting is required.
- T3 investigation (NACLC/ANACI is acceptable if completed within 5 years prior to enrollment). A favorably adjudicated SECRET security clearance eligibility, with no access to classified, is required
Preferred Qualifications:
- Completion of an ACLAM-Recognized Residency:
- Residency in Laboratory Animal Medicine is highly desirable for expertise in clinical care and research involving laboratory animals.
- This can lead to board certification by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM), a prestigious credential in this field.
- Advanced Certifications (Optional but Beneficial):
- Board certification in Laboratory Animal Medicine (DACLAM).
- Certifications in Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) or specific biosecurity protocols.
- Completion of an ACLAM-recognized laboratory animal medicine residency is desirable.
- Experience with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) is desirable.
The salary range for this position is $120,000 to $150,000 annually.
