Overview

HJF is seeking a Scientist III to lead the development and execution of research projects. Supervises projects and investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. Develops new technologies and protocols.

This position will be in support of the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE) supporting the Blast Clinical Threshold Working Group located in Bethesda, MD on the campus of the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. NICoE is a DoD institute dedicated to providing cutting-edge evaluation, treatment, and research for service members dealing with complex interactions of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and psychological health (PH) conditions.

The Henry M. Jackson Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine (HJF) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing military medicine. We serve military, medical, academic and government clients by administering, managing and supporting preeminent scientific programs that benefit members of the armed forces and civilians alike. Since its founding in 1983, HJF has served as a vital link between the military medical community and its federal and private partners. HJF's support and administrative capabilities allow military medical researchers and clinicians to maintain their scientific focus and accomplish their research goals.


Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates cross-disciplinary knowledge, leadership, and communication. Designs and implements experimental protocol.
  • Trains and supervises technical staff and other scientists. Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.
  • Coordinates efforts of all agencies involved in the project process.
  • Reviews applicable IRB documentation and protocols, prepares revisions, and submits required institution and federal documentation in support of project execution.
  • Ensures compliance with appropriate rules and regulations as well as reviews project progress and recommends revisions, amendments, and/or other project changes as necessary to better meet sponsor needs.
  • Works with the study team to assist with data coordination, abstraction, input, and analysis. Assess strengths and weaknesses of work.
  • Prepares publication-ready manuscripts, technical reports, presentations, and sponsor reports. Finalizes reports and reviews for submission to scientific journals and patent applications.
  • Makes scientific observations, maintains detailed workbooks/documentation, and ensures documentation fulfills generally accepted professional/industry standards.
  • Coordinates and prepares new grant and funding applications.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Assigned Lead: May recommend the following: employee hiring, disciplinary action, and starting salaries; provide input on employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral Degree required.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years experience required.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Significant background in Neuroscience and or TBI research.
  • Knowledge of federal and local regulations and policies pertinent to research involving human subjects.
  • Familiarity with clinical research methods.
  • Knowledge of applicable complex scientific procedures and techniques.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.
  • US Citizenship and the ability to obtain and maintain a T3/Secret Clearance.

Physical Capabilities:

  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range for this position is $105,500-$155,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
