About the role:

Boston Scientific Interventional Oncology & Embolization (IO&E) is the market leader in therapeutics and tools for interventional radiologists, featuring Y90 microspheres, ablation devices, embolic devices and a selection of ancillary products.

Boston Scientific is looking to add a new Principal R&D Engineer position on the TheraSphere Y90 R&D team within the Interventional Oncology & Embolization group. Key responsibilities of this role will be to support and lead new product development and exploratory initiatives on the TheraSphere Y90 R&D team and to help establish and utilize new isotope testing capabilities in an R&D lab being built.

Work Mode

This role follows a hybrid work model, requiring employees to be in our local office at least three days per week. This Principal R&D Engineer position will be based in Maple Grove, MN.

Your responsibilities will include:



  • Research and Development:

    • Serve as a subject matter expert on nuclear medicine and radioembolic devices and procedures.
    • Drives complex or novel assignment requiring the development of new or improved techniques and procedures. Work is expected to result in the development of new or refined test methods, technologies, products, materials, processes, equipment, and/or scientific methods to broaden BSC's Intellectual Property in key strategic areas.
    • Successfully completes engineering work in one or more of the following: exploratory research, technology development, product design and development, test of materials, preparation of specifications, research investigation (animal and clinical studies), and report preparation.
    • May interface with Physicians to identify needs and to obtain feedback on concepts and performance of new devices and to translate customer needs into product concepts.
    • Trains and/or provides work direction to technicians and less experienced engineers in the development and safe handling of radioembolic products.
    • Demonstrates appropriate quality and technical system knowledge through delivery of high quality and high impact deliverables.
    • Evaluates literature in support of new concepts or products.


  • Radiation Safety and Compliance:

    • Ensure safe handling and testing of radiation therapies within a new R&D lab being built to support the TheraSphere Y90 franchise.
    • Implement and monitor quality control and safety protocols.
    • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulations and standards.
    • Provides necessary training to internal and external personnel.





Required qualifications:



  • BS in Engineering, Medical Physics, or related field.
  • Required minimum years of work experience (primarily in medical device or related field): 7+ years with BS, 5+ years with MS
  • Experience managing technical aspects of projects as a member of a cross-functional core team
  • Demonstrated strong cross-functional collaboration, influence without authority, and project/taskmanagement enabling highly effective teams
  • Passion for understanding and solving problems with an ability to quickly learn and understand complex subject matter
  • Strong scientific and technical writing skills exemplified by a proven ability to clearly communicate complex technical concepts through scientific publications, regulatory submissions, or similar documents



Preferred qualifications:



  • MS or PhD in Engineering, Medical Physics, or related field
  • Experience in nuclear medicine, diagnostic or therapeutic radiation, or working with radioactive materials in academia, hospital/clinic or industry setting.

The anticipated compensation listed above and the value of core and optional employee benefits offered by Boston Scientific (BSC) - see www.bscbenefitsconnect.com--will vary based on actual location of the position and other pertinent factors considered in determining actual compensation for the role. Compensation will be commensurate with demonstrable level of experience and training, pertinent education including licensure and certifications, among other relevant business or organizational needs. At BSC, it is not typical for an individual to be hired near the bottom or top of the anticipated salary range listed above.

Compensation for non-exempt (hourly), non-sales roles may also include variable compensation from time to time (e.g., any overtime and shift differential) and annual bonus target (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).

Compensation for exempt, non-sales roles may also include variable compensation, i.e., annual bonus target and long-term incentives (subject to plan eligibility and other requirements).
