Position Overview

McAdams is adding to our Active Transportation and Greenways practice and is searching for the right designer to join our team. The selected candidate will possess strong analytical, communication and production skills and experience. Our Active Transportation and Greenways practice is an industry leader in North Carolina and provides the full spectrum of planning and design services to our clients.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for advancing Active Transportation and Greenway infrastructure. This position will be mentored by senior engineering professionals and will be encouraged to pursue licensure as appropriate.

Key Responsibilities



  • Under close supervision, work directly with Project Managers to advance active transportation projects from feasibility analysis through design, permitting, and successful bidding.
  • Support the design and produce contract documents, specifications and costs estimates suitable for publicly bid projects.
  • Work daily with direct team members and other disciplines including Engineers, Designers, Landscape Architects, and Planners in hybrid project teams
  • Conduct field observations and data collection activities to support design development.
  • Be proficient in the application of transportation design concepts and techniques at a variety of scales.
  • Support design, technical analyses, and engineering calculations and prepare plans, submittal packages and applications for grading, drainage, stormwater management as part of a project team.
  • Support public outreach and community engagement efforts.
  • Contribute to the overall goals and effectiveness of the team.
  • Multi-task and communicate schedule and progress on assigned tasks.
  • Be energetic, self-directed and success focused.
  • Think critically and solve problems.
  • Actively participate in industry organizations.


Skills + Experience



  • Four-year bachelor's degree from an accredited program in Civil Engineering or related field
  • 0 - 2 years of active transportation experience in the public or private sector (including internships)
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design programs (AutoCad / Microstation)
  • Excellent communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent task and time management skills
  • Self-starter with strong drive to better oneself, project team, and community
  • Valid driver's license


Preferred Qualifications



  • EI on path to PE preferred
  • Experience with Civil 3D / Open Roads Designer
  • Knowledge of NCDOT standards and procedures
  • Exposure to ArcMap or other GIS Software

  • Work will primarily be in an office setting with limited opportunities to be exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

  • Must have visual acuity for viewing a computer screen, the ability to talk, hear and sit for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to carry, lift and push/pull up to 5 pounds frequently and up to 30 pounds occasionally.
  • Additional physical duties may be required as necessary.
