Tutor/Residential Tutor Advisor (10 positions), Pool position, UAS
Upward Bound Residential Program
$17.28 Hourly
Work Schedule:
Dates: June 23, 2025 - August 1, 2025, Monday through Friday 8:30 am - 2:30 pm.
Tutor may transition from the classroom to the residential program for 2 weeks Sunday-Friday, including overnight supervision, hours to be determined.
Tutor position may extend into the academic year (Saturday Academy/Study Hall).
Overview:
Under the supervision of the Director and Academic Coordinator, the incumbent will oversee a group of high school participants during the residential program.
Essential Functions
- Tutor high school students as part of the summer program at Cal State LA in the areas of Math, Science, and Language Arts.
- Oversee a group of high school participants during the residential program, closely monitoring activities, overnight stay, and providing team leadership to all the Upward Bound staff, participants, and community.
- Assist in preparation of check in/out of students, dinner distribution, special activities set up and/or developmental materials and activities for students; assist with academic counseling; advise participants regarding college, financial aid, and career information; attend daily meetings, and other duties as assigned. Tutor high school students during the residential program in the areas of Math, Science, English, and Foreign Language.
- May perform office tasks that include; greeting and directing clients/visitors, answering phones, completing copy requests, typing, filing, data entry, running errands, and inventory.
- Perform other duties as needed.
Requirements
- Education; must be enrolled in postsecondary education with progress towards a bachelor's degree; Must be in good academic standing.
- Interest in tutoring high school students; ability to work with UB Program personnel and low-income disadvantaged students at secondary level.
- Experience: Prior experience as a residential advisor, tutor, and/or peer counselor. Ability to work with High School students of low-income disadvantaged family backgrounds. Prefer Upward Bound Project Alumni.

The incumbent must demonstrate an interest or ability to work in a multicultural/multiethnic environment. A background check (including a criminal records check) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can be offered a position with the UAS. Failure to satisfactorily complete the background check may affect the application status of applicants or the continued employment of current UAS employees who apply for the position.
