Overview

Performs venipuncture and skin punctures. The laboratory assistant greets patients, orders tests in the LIS, maintains lab files, and ensures proper routing of reports. In addition to lab assistant duties, they are responsible for the following: Performs venipuncture and capillary collections on patients of all age ranges. May also be trained to perform arterial draws. Trained to perform Waived testing in the laboratory. Answer the phone and assist patients and providers with the information they require. Responsible for drawing and collecting timed draws and stat orders from ER, Med Surg, SSD, FMS, LTS, ACU, and psych. Responsible for drawing and collecting outpatient orders and calling respiratory when an EKG is needed. ? Responsible for informing other shifts about any unusual circumstances.

Responsibilities

Complies with established standards of practice, laboratory policies and procedures. Follow strict principals of asepsis and infection control, both in the lab and with patients. Verifies written/phone orders from physicians and providers.
Accurately inputs orders into the computer and laboratory LIS.
Selects appropriate tubes for laboratory testing and uses the correct draw order.
Properly wash/Purell hands, disinfects site of dray, and uses appropriate needle/equipment.
Greets persons coming into the laboratory, answers inquires, gives assistance, and relays messages.
Identifies patient using a minimum of two patient identifiers (example: Name and DOB). Properly labels tubes with patient information and initials.
Performs venipuncture, and capillary draws. Performs arterial blood collection.
Sends copies of reports to physicians and medical records.
Maintains records of tests sent to reference labs.
Checks for outstanding orders not yet complete.
Examines specimens for correct identification and specimen integrity.
Maintains confidentiality of reports.
Registers outpatient for tests and acts as a direct laboratory contact with the public. Answers incoming phone calls, directs inquiries to appropriate areas.
Accepts special assignments as an opportunity for further growth and development. Performs miscellaneous duties as assigned in a timely and professional manner.
Works with neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients in an appropriate manner.
Asks for help when necessary.
Assists histology tech with clerical functions.
Files histology blocks and slides as needed.
Problem solving questions Waived Testing.
Collects DOT and non-DOT drug screens.
Assists with the training of new laboratory assistants.
Maintains stock of Phlebotomy and Drug Screen supplies.

Compensation and Benefits

The compensation range for this position is $15.86per hour - $25.69per hour. This represents a good faith minimum and maximum range for the role at the time of posting by Carle Health. The actual compensation offered a candidate will be dependent on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate's experience, qualifications, location, training, licenses, shifts worked and compensation model.
