Position Summary

As an Inspector Trainee, you will be responsible for performing a variety of technical engineering support tasks. The specific duties include learning to inspect construction and maintenance projects.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities



  • Develop and obtain knowledge, qualifications, and required certifications for roadway and bridge construction inspection using VDOT construction, safety, and environmental methods and processes, material testing procedures, and engineering principles and documentation.
  • Become familiar with plans, specifications, standards, and related material.
  • Perform construction activities outdoors, walking on uneven terrain and during all types of weather.
  • Perform daily assigned inspections and reports and other tasks in a training capacity preparatory to assuming the duties of an inspector.
  • Inspects excavations, drainage structures, road surfaces, and structures to compare the work performed to plans and specifications, conferring frequently with higher-level inspectors or engineering personnel to clarify or interpret details.


Required Skills / Abilities



  • A motor vehicle operator's license, valid in the State of Virginia
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Must be proficient in basic computer software.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Must be able and willing to work day and night shifts.
  • Ability to physically perform essential duties such as walking, standing, bending, and lifting loads weighing up to 80 lbs.
  • Required to work various shifts and on weekends depending on assignments.


Education and/or Experience



  • A high school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of construction roadway or site inspection experience


Certifications/Licenses



  • Must be able to obtain the following certifications within 90 days of employment:

    • Pavement Marking - VDOT
    • Intermediate Work Zone - VDOT
    • Asphalt Field Levels I and II - VDOT




Physical Demands

The incumbent in this position can typically expect to sit and use his/her hands to handle and feel for more than 1/3 of the day. He/she can expect to stand or walk for more than 2/3 of the day. Talking and listening are also expected for more than 2/3 of the day. The ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, or reach with arms will be needed for more than 1/3 of the day.

This position requires that the incumbent be able to lift items up to 80 pounds on a frequent basis.

The incumbent in this position should have clear vision at 20 inches or less. He/she should be able to view various reports and forms as well as information displayed on a computer monitor and have the ability to distinguish between different colors. Depth perception, peripheral vision, the ability to focus, and the ability to see from a distance are also necessary.
