Overview

Job Summary

Monitors and controls a computer by operating the central console or on-line terminals. Maintains records regarding output units and supply inventories. Assists in manipulating controls to rearrange sequence of job steps to continue operations when individual units of the system malfunction.

Essential Functions

  • Checks individuals entering the data center equipment area ensuring that they sign in and have approved access. Responsible for internal security of the data center.
  • Monitors the data center fire prevention systems.
  • Assists the shift lead in monitoring and controlling the computer peripheral equipment via consoles.
  • Assists in reviewing and evaluating through examination of computer run results and use of computer time.
  • Operates the computer system only when assigned the duties by the shift lead and only under direct supervision.
  • Assists in maintaining an orderly computer room, equipment room and surrounding area.
  • Conducts operator preventive maintenance to include cleaning equipment.
  • Maintains off-site tape locations and creates tape labels.
  • Assists in maintaining operating records such as laser printer meter readings, machine downtime and other logs vital to the operation.
  • Recommends and implements solutions for problems within the team.
Physical Requirements
Must have the visibility through verbal and written communication with shift lead and computer operator senior, associated project deadlines and personnel evaluation. Works in an air-conditioned environment. Must be able to lift up to 55 lbs.

Education, Experience and Certifications

High School Diploma or GED required; Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Business Administration or job related field preferred. 0 to 3 years of Computer Operations experience with various Unix platforms.
