We are looking for a 2 year fixed term Training Advisor to ensure training programs are identified, developed, and deployed to address the knowledge, skills and behaviors that are required to support the Rio Tinto Kennecott underground project and the transition to steady state underground operations.

This role will also be required to identify and develop training solutions that will address the cultural, leadership and professional development needs of the Project.

This is a great opportunity to be responsible for the strategic planning and program execution that must encompass the assessment of training needs for the full gamut of roles included in the Workforce Plan, in relation to planned mining methodologies and the safe and efficient operation of mining equipment and fixed plant.

Reporting to the Senior Advisor - Training and working in a collaborative community, you will be

  • Support the work to establish training systems structure and data capturing methods ensuring simplicity and sustainability.
  • Maintain the site training needs analysis, update and maintain the site training matrix and communicate to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Develop an MSHA approved training plan in accordance with MSHA Part 48 regulations.
  • Deliver MSHA UG miner training (new miner, experienced miner, and annual refresher) and other required training for UG workforce.
  • Develop implement and maintain effective Train the Trainer program for trainers
  • Oversee the web-based training courses development, updates using web-based training software (articulate storyline, rise 360 etc)
  • Work on SAP standard transaction (learning management system) to manage the training data and integration work with other departments datasets to provide accurate training report when necessary
  • Work with operations team to support continuous improvement of the operator's performance
  • Support and implement the system of performance appraisal
  • Roll-out and deliver additional training courses as we transition to build in-house course materials
  • Participate in gap training needs analysis to ensure Safety Standards are established and improvement targets are set
  • Provide training and development advice to site leaders and employees when required
  • Participate in training audits and assessments
  • Liaising with both internal and external work groups, committees, and stakeholders to remain current on training issues and assist in the development of training courses
  • Manage training documentation and qualification records according to document management standards

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • 3+ years' experience in metalliferous underground mining
  • A sound understanding of the training and documentation requirements in accordance with MSHA Part 48 regulations
  • MSHA approved instructor (blue card holder) qualification will be advantage
  • Demonstrated experience in the establishment and maintenance of Training & Learning Management Systems and effective training program delivery and assessment
  • Excellent stakeholder engagement and relationship building skills at all levels with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Computer proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (including Power BI, articulate storyline or rise 360)
  • English language proficiency
  • Experience in coaching/consulting with leaders in a professional environment

Health and Safety Section:

  • Having the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
  • Abide by Company Health and Safety standards and report any unsafe acts or conditions to a supervisor and/ or a member of management team
  • Responsible for the use of all safety equipment, i.e, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation
  • Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves, and any other protective equipment as required
  • Must have knowledge of OSHA and MSHA legislation and know how to effectively use Safety Data Sheets (SDS). MSHA Certification is required by site
  • Complete Risk Assessments/JHA for each new and unusual task

Where you'll be working

Our Kennecott mine is a world-class, fully integrated copper mining operation, including a concentrator, smelter, and refinery, located just outside Salt Lake City, Utah, in the United States. We produce copper, precious metals including gold and silver, molybdenum, and sulfuric acid. Kennecott has been mining and processing minerals from the rich ore body of the Bingham Canyon Mine since 1903 and is one of the top producing mines in the world, comprising approximately 11 percent of U.S. annual copper production.
