Job Description

Position Summary

The Associate Underwriting Consultant works closely with the Director of Underwriting and Senior Underwriting Consultant to translate business rating requirements into rate actions for a Trust covering 100,000 lives. They establish proposal rates for various insurance lines and assist in determining and implementing appropriate group insurance rate actions. They also conduct data analysis, calculate new business and renewal rates, and communicate these proposals to internal staff. Additionally, they identify potential improvements to rating processes and ensure compliance with confidentiality and security policies.

Purpose of Position

To help ensure the Group Benefits Trust remains financially viable by ensuring enough premiums are generated and collected to offset our member's claims and out Trust's operational expenses.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform research, assemble data, and analyze responses to inquiries
  • Calculate new business rates and communicate them to internal staff
  • Calculate renewal rates for various insurance products using appropriate
  • Work on complex new business opportunities, evaluating and analyzing data for new proposal calculations under the guidance of the Senior Underwriting Consultant.
  • Translate and organize underwriting results to update the member-facing rate modeling system.
  • Conduct peer reviews for accuracy during the annual rerate process.
  • Identify potential improvements to rating processes and reporting functionality.
Qualifications

Required Qualifications and Skills:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in Underwriting, Marketplace Evaluations, Financial Analysis, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of group health insurance products (e.g. PPO, HMO, EPO, etc. plans)
  • Familiarity with all major group health insurers.
  • Strong analytical and data interpretation skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
  • Ability to independently work with minimal direction.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance or related field

Essential Physical Requirements:

  • The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for sedentary work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for light work.
