Engineering Manager - Functional Engineering

Job Overview

Functional Engineering provides supplemental support to the Product Engineering Teams. The Engineering Manager role is responsible for leading, supervising, and coaching engineers and technical personnel, ensuring engineering deliverables are accurate and on time. In collaboration Product Management and Product Engineering leadership, this role is to provide vision and strategic leadership for New Product Development, Continuous Improvement, and problem resolution.

Key Job Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for a team of engineers and technical personnel responsible for the following:

    • Investigate safety-related incidents reported by machine operators. Present findings to the Product Safety Council
    • Investigate and respond to all Product Support electrical issues escalated to engineering. Close cases with findings and corrective action
    • Develop and validate new products as prescribed by the Aftermarket Product Council
    • Facilitate machine performance curve design reviews and archive results
    • Develop drive parameter sets for new machine types based on machine performance curves
    • Manage all machine AC and DC drive firmware and parameter set releases that drive continuous improvement
    • Maintain master electrical schematics for all OE and retrofit machine orders
    • Develop and validate new motor technical specifications and designs
    • Provide engineering support for motor manufacturing, including deviation requests and root cause analysis


  • Establish team goals aligned with strategic plan and ensure goals are achieved.
  • Ensure team member responsibilities and accountability are clearly communicated.
  • Ensure subject-matter experts and stakeholders are included in decision making and design reviews.
  • Serve as technical adviser on leadership boards.
  • Provide project scope and budgetary estimates.
  • Influence and coach team, driving for results and team member career development.
  • Communicate and coordinate Engineering activities with other functional groups (Operations, Supply Chain, Planning, Testing, Business Unit Engineering Teams, Product Support, etc.)
  • Manage complex decision making effectively among multiple stakeholders.
  • Support New Product Development, prototyping, and validation.
  • Review and approve Engineering Change Orders.

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree Electrical Engineering. Mechanical Engineering degree with extensive electrical engineering background will be considered
  • 10+ years of engineering experience
  • 5+ years in a leadership role
  • 3+ years of program, project, or new product development management experience
  • Knowledge of the NFPA 70 NEC, NEMA and IEC standards
  • Understanding of the mining, construction, or other heavy equipment industry
  • Exercise strong business acumen and value-based decision making
  • Resolve complex problems within abbreviated time horizons
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong people skills and ability to work across department lines to influence and build consensus
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and drive projects to closure
  • Ability to travel up to 15%. Occasional international travel will be required.


Desired Technical Expertise

  • Experience in both AC and DC drive applications with dynamic 4-quadrant control of high inertial loads
  • Understand of SR, PM, AC, and DC drive and motor fundamentals
  • Familiar with regenerative loads, field weakening, and 4-Q speed/torque operational envelopes
  • Experience with interpreting drive firmware diagrams, identifying problems, and providing solutions
  • Experience in power quality assessment, including FFT, mitigation measures, and power factor correction
  • Experience in drive, motor, electrical component, and conductor sizing based on dynamic duty cycle in compliance with standards such as NFPA 70, IEC 60228, CSA
