Who we are looking for: Are you looking for an opportunity to be a part of making a difference in cancer care and medicine in a dynamic team environment? We have an opening for a driven and experienced State Advocacy Specialist to advance our critical policy priorities across the nation at the state level. Don't miss this opportunity to contribute to meaningful advocacy efforts in cancer care and make an impact! This position is hybrid, with a primary location in Alexandria, VA. We anticipate the hire to be onsite approximately at/or around 10-15 days per year. Responsibilities Work with the state advocacy team to develop and implement state advocacy strategies. Research, analyze, and track state legislation and regulations relating to cancer care and the practice of medicine. Draft letters, testimony, and other materials related to state legislation and regulations and coordinate submission with State Affiliates. Actively participate in state coalition strategy development and build relationships with state societies, cancer community and physician organization counterparts. Identify opportunities to increase ASCO and State Affiliate's engagement and visibility in state advocacy, such as through testimony and meetings with state policymakers. Work with the policy communications team to seek opportunities for ASCO to engage in media efforts on state issues, such as press event participation, social media press releases, and op-eds. Coordinate with the Grassroots Advocacy Specialist to draft and share state level grassroots alerts. Serve as a state advocacy resource for State Affiliates, ASCO committees, and others. Travel to and participate in state affiliate meetings and lobby days. Attend conferences and represent ASCO's state advocacy program externally. Seek opportunities for ASCO to engage in media efforts on state issues, including social media, press statements, event participation, and op-eds, in coordination with the policy communications team. Required Education and Experience BA or BS in political science, public policy or a related field 4+ years of related work experience with demonstrated knowledge of and experience in state government relations at a state government, professional association, state government, or healthcare entity Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, & various internet browsers & search engines and familiarity with legislative & regulatory search programs & engines Preferred Education and Experience Knowledge of the state legislative and regulatory process Knowledge of issues impacting cancer care and research Healthcare background Competencies Excellent communication skills, including written, with ability to clearly convey and receive information Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with ability to make decisions with sound judgement Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills with a positive and enthusiastic attitude Self-managed with excellent time management skills and proven ability meet deadlines, prioritize, and multi-task Excellent organizational skills with high attention to detail Work Environment Hybrid work location based out of the Alexandria, VA office. ADA/Physical Requirements Fast-paced office environment with extended periods seated or standing at a desk High use of computer and other office technology equipment.
