The Physical Therapist 3 (PT 3) is responsible for organizing, coordinating, and implementing physical therapy services to orthopedic patients in the post-surgical care unit of a large surgery center and other patients as assigned by the Physical Therapy Supervisor.

The PT 3 is expected to train specific physical therapy staff and act as a resource for other physical therapy personnel working with orthopedic and post-op patients. The PT 3 keeps abreast of current knowledge in the field and shares this information with the healthcare community. This therapist carries qualifications that are professionally recognized in the field. This position requires the ability to serve as a resource for knowledge and care strategies for complex patients and those patients within their specialty area to other professionals outside of the department.

Minimum Qualifications - For full consideration, applicants are encouraged to upload a license and/or certification if required for the position

  • Must be a California Licensed Physical Therapist
  • Must possess and maintain a CPR certification (American Heart Association or on-site through UC Davis Health)
  • Must possess a minimum of a Baccalaureate degree in Physical Therapy
  • Demonstrated recent minimum of 5 years of clinical experience in Physical Therapy
  • Must have an APTA clinical educator certification OR the willingness to obtain APTA clinical educator certification within six (6) months from the date of hire
  • Basic knowledge in physical therapy as identified by the Physical Therapy Practice Act and certification by the State of California
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills and sound judgment to make quick and effective decisions within the scope of practice
  • Knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology and skills in monitoring a patient's physiological status during treatment

Preferred Qualifications

  • A Board-certified specialty certification
  • A Master's Degree or Doctorate in Physical Therapy
  • Demonstrated recent 5 years minimum of working in acute care or outpatient orthopedics
  • Advanced knowledge of and skill to apply practices, principles, and techniques of patient care related to physical therapy as identified by the Physical Therapy Practice Act and licensure by the State of California
  • Advanced ability to treat complex patients utilizing specialized knowledge, skills, and ability in the assessment, treatment, and management of patients within their area of specialization
  • Ability to serve as a senior-level resource for the clinic in the area of rehabilitation services including advancing the knowledge and treatment within their area of specialty helping to train staff with less experience and expertise and helping them grow in their clinical abilities
  • Ability to educate and train professional staff within the health system and in the community including developing education material and presentations for groups outside the department and within the medical school
  • Ability to assist with overall management functions of the clinic to ensure that daily operations are done efficiently and effectively assisting the supervisor and acting as the lead to help when supervisor is unavailable
  • Skills in effective verbal and written communication; able to effectively communicate with staff in a clear, concise, professional manner and able to establish rapport and communicate well with patients and family members
  • Ability to triage complex patients including the ability to help define decision trees to assist other staff members ability to triage
  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility with daily job functions in a dynamic work environment where priorities and situations may change day to day and throughout the day
  • Skills in the area of judgment, including clinical and non-clinical judgment Leadership skills with a focus on improving the skills and patient management strategies of the less senior therapists and other staff members
  • Organizational and development skills
  • Skills and ability to work in stressful situations throughout the healthcare setting including working with less senior staff to help them navigate stressful situations
  • Tact and diplomacy skills with all interactions including but not limited to patients, staff, and outside medical professionals

Key Responsibilities

  • 70% - Provides Physical Therapy services to Neurologic, Orthopedic, and other patients
  • 10% - Acts as a lead therapist
  • 5% - Professional activities
  • 5% - Responsible for day-to-day operations of the Outpatient service

Work Environment
