Organizational Unit Overview |
The School of Dental Medicine is composed of ten administrative offices and four academic departments. The Administrative units include the Offices of the Dean, Vice Dean, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Associate Dean for Research, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, Associate Dean for Extramural Clinical Practices, Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, Assistant Dean for Dental Education and Informatics, Assistant Dean for Academic Success and the Assistant Dean or Business Operations and Financial Affairs. The four academic departments are Surgical Sciences, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics, General Dentistry and Foundational Sciences.
Included in the mission of the School of Dental Medicine is to educate dental care providers (both dental students and dental residents) and to address the oral health care needs of the underserved population of North Carolina. The School of Dental Medicine meets these missions by operating dental clinics that provide both educational experiences for the dental students and residents and provides dental care to the residents of North Carolina. These clinics occur in both Ross Hall in Greenville, North Carolina, as well as Community Service-Learning Centers located throughout North Carolina. In order to operate these clinics, appropriate dental auxiliaries and clinical staff are needed. Advanced patient care is also provided to patients by participating faculty in the Faculty Practice in Ross Hall. |
Job Duties |
The purpose of this position is to provide clinical support to Faculty in the School of Dental Medicine Faculty Practice clinic.
The dental assistant will in assist 4-handed dentistry. This position is responsible for patient preparation and patient flow. This position accesses patient information, charts as directed by faculty dentists monitors patients blood pressure and sedation as required. The dental assistant participates in dental exams and procedures. The dental assistant follows
OSHA standards for hand washing, masking, gloving and disposal of contaminants. The dental assistant monitors patients as they are receiving treatment. The dental assistant performs dental x-rays as ordered by the dentist. The dental assistant transports patients as needed.
The dental assistant will assist in a business support role for patients, dentist, and other staff. In an administrative support role, the dental assistant could be asked to answer clinic phone lines, check in patients, review external patient referrals and schedule appointments, and send Medical consultations to external providers.
The dental assistant is responsible for the distribution of and accounting for clinical instruments and equipment signed out to faculty members, residents, and other staff. This accountability is managed by a computer-based Dispensary Module of the electronic dental record software package. This position also reports any needed equipment repairs to the facilities manager. This person will be responsible for unloading instrument cassettes and other instruments and equipment from the equipment carts when delivered from Central Sterilization Suite. |
Minimum Education/Experience |
High school diploma or equivalency and completion of an accredited dental assisting program; or equivalent combination of training and experience. |
