Position Description:

In the role of a Genetic Counselor you will be working in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Purpose

Provides genetic counseling as a practitioner in cooperation with medical staff within Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin. Works within defined scope of practice directly with the patient to provide assessment, counseling, test facilitation, follow-up, and referral to resources as necessary. Provides needed documentation for patient and physicians. Develops, implements, and executes Genetic Counseling Program initiatives to assist in the program operating at the highest standard of quality and consistency, supporting the Medical College of Wisconsin's strategies and initiatives. Cooperates in activities and responsibilities with fellow genetic counselors.

Primary Functions

* Provide genetic counseling related to Reproductive Medicine and Prenatal clinical programs:
* Review and interpret pertinent medical and family history
* Educate, counsel and assist patients and families through their decision-making process
* Coordinate the ordering and interpretation of laboratory tests as appropriate
* Provide risk assessment based on family history, personal risk factors and genetic test results
* Facilitate patient access to other medical services, agencies and community resources
* Identify potential patient research opportunities related to genetics
* Assist in the development of IRB required consents and compliance of all protocols
* Work independently under the direction of the manager, providing support to the team to facilitate the achievement of the program's goals:
* Provide input on program design, developing and implementing initiatives
* Assist in establishing appropriate benchmarks for quality and service, and implements plans for program improvement
* Work with program staff to assist in the development, implementation and maintenance of comprehensive databases and files related to the program
* Collect, analyze and disseminate program data
* Maintain program timeline including tracking deadlines for program components
* Assist in the development of program materials including educational materials, marketing materials, websites, forms and reports
* Assist in recruitment and training of program staff
* Participate in the development and implementation of new genetic tests
* Advance genomics education:
* Participate in the development of educational programs for physicians, allied health professionals, residents, students and the community
* Train and supervise medical students, residents, fellows, undergraduate and graduate students


Knowledge - Skills - Abilities

Maintain competence and certification by attending and participating in grand rounds, tumor boards and other relevant educational opportunities. Makes appropriate decisions based on education, analysis, wisdom, experience, and judgment. Uses methods that effectively solve difficult problems, explores available resources for answers, and identifies obscure problems.
Knowledge of biology, clinical judgment, medicine, cultural awareness, and consulting.
Medical documentation, interpersonal, practice-based learning and improvement, empathy, and decision-making skills.

Position Requirements:

Specifications

Minimum Required Education: Master's Degree. Graduate program must be accredited by The Accreditation Council for Genetic Counseling.
Minimum Required Experience: 1 year of progressively responsible experience in clinical genetics
Preferred Experience: Medical/patient care counseling experience preferred
Field: Genetics, Genetic Counseling or related field
Certification: Certification as a Genetic Counselor granted by the American Board of Medical Genetics or American Board of Genetic Counseling or to be obtained within one year of hire.
Licensure: Licensed as a Genetic Counselor granted by the state of Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services or temporary license to be obtained within the year of hire.
