Position Description: |
INTERNAL SEARCH - ONLY CURRENT CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FACULTY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION. BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY: The Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (ADGME) in the Carver College of Medicine (CCOM) also serves as the Designated Institutional Officer (DIO)/Associate Hospital Director for Graduate Medical Education, University of Iowa Healthcare. The ADGME advises the Dean, the Executive Associate Dean, the CEO and other senior staff on matters pertaining to GME. This position will work with the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC) to oversee and administer the institution's GME programs, assuring compliance with the ACGME institution, including common and specialty/subspecialty program requirements. RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Develop and Lead GME Office: Establish and oversee a Graduate Medical Education (GME) Office that provides comprehensive support to residents and fellows throughout their training at University of Iowa Health Care.
- Strategic Program Development: Collaborate with UI Health Care leaders, Department Chairs, and Program Directors to assess GME program needs, ensuring alignment with the institution's strategic plan and regional/national healthcare priorities.
- Resident Performance & Professionalism: Address individual resident performance and professional concerns in coordination with relevant UI Health Care and University of Iowa teams.
- Accreditation & Compliance: Ensure GME initiatives comply with accreditation standards, including LCME, JCAHO, and ACGME requirements, maintaining institutional accreditation integrity.
- Mentorship & Faculty Development: Provide mentorship and professional development opportunities for Program Directors/Coordinators, fostering leadership in medical education.
- Regulatory & Institutional Compliance: Maintain up-to-date expertise on ACGME institutional requirements and oversee accurate documentation in compliance with regulatory agencies and institutional policies.
- Committee Engagement: Serve as a voting member of the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC), collaborating to uphold compliance with ACGME institutional, common, and specialty-specific requirements.
- Accreditation & Reporting Oversight: Supervise ACGME-accredited programs ( as well as non-accredited programs), ensuring adherence to accreditation standards, and lead the submission of required reports, including the Annual Institutional Review (AIR).
- Program Director Appointments: Support the nomination and approval process for Program and Fellowship Directors in collaboration with institutional leadership and the GMEC.
- Program Agreements & Site Relationships: Approve Program Letters of Agreement (PLAs) that govern relationships between each program and its participating sites, ensuring compliance with ACGME requirements for required resident/fellow assignments.
- Financial/Budget Oversight: Understand and contribute to GME budgeting processes, including Medicare Indirect and Direct GME funding considerations and responsible for assessing and recommending new FTE allocations to GME.
- Institutional & National Engagement: Represent UI Health Care on relevant committees and engage with national GME leaders to enhance the institution's reputation and integrate best practices.
- Educational Continuum Collaboration: Partner with UI Health Care education teams to support seamless integration across undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Supervision is received from the Dean/Vice President for Medical Affairs. SUPERVISION PROVIDED: Supervision is provided to administrative staff within the GME Office.

Education Requirement: |
- MD, DO, or MD/PhD or is required.

Required Qualifications: |
- INTERNAL SEARCH - ONLY CURRENT CARVER COLLEGE OF MEDICINE FACULTY ARE ELIGIBLE FOR CONSIDERATION.
- Experience serving as an educational leader in Graduate Medical Education as either a Program Director, Designated Institutional Officer (DIO), or Associate DIO.
- Strong understanding of ACGME accreditation requirements.
- Demonstrated success in educational program development.
- Demonstrated success in obtaining/maintaining high levels of accreditation compliance with ACGME standards.
- Knowledge of applicable fiscal, HR, and other related policies for an academic medical center.
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
- A record of successfully mentoring faculty for careers in medical education.
- Significant experience with promoting a collaborative climate that recognizes, celebrates, and rewards education.
- Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Certifications: |
- Board certification in their field of medicine; must be licensed, or eligible to be licensed, in the State of Iowa.

Desirable Qualifications: |
- National reputation as an educational leader demonstrated through scholarship or service in professional organizations.
