Description

Salary range is $55k to $130k, with a midpoint of $85k. New hires typically receive between minimum and midpoint, however, we may go slightly higher based on experience, internal equity and market.

This is a direct-hire temporary opportunity with an expected employment duration of 12 months

GENERAL PURPOSE:

Did you know a train has never gone over a floating bridge anywhere in the world? Sound Transit is opening the East Link extension connecting Seattle to Bellevue over Lake Washington and we need a motivated, technical Instructional Designer to join our team.

The Instructional Designer is responsible for the design and development of a variety of learning materials. The scope of projects includes producing interactive technical training and software simulations, job aids, eLearning and Instructor-Led courses, instructional videos, and technical documentation. The person in this position is expected to have excellent writing abilities, end-to-end program development experience, an eye for design, and a commitment to accessibility through design.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The following duties are a representative summary of the primary duties and responsibilities. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties.



  • Design a variety of instructional materials such as instructor led training (live or virtual), job aids, eLearning tutorials, and presentation materials.
  • Create realistic objectives for learning or performance for students and instructors.
  • Determine the criteria used to judge learner's successful performance and develop assessment tools to measure said criteria.
  • Design courses that are conducive to distance learning programs while still adhering to training goals of the Department.
  • Recommend changes to existing courses, including technology or graphic elements, to better adhere to delivery options for the course.
  • Analyze courses to ensure they meet or exceed Agency standards.
  • Build accessibility into courses so learners of all abilities have high quality learning experiences.
  • Manage updates and revisions to existing training materials ensuring they are accurate and consistent with system functionality.
  • Remain aware of all emerging instructional theories, practices and methods, and make recommendations about when to adopt certain systems to continue to offer the best learning experience possible.
  • Interface with leadership, product owners, partners, and stakeholders to align learning campaigns and objectives with strategic objectives and feature release schedules.
  • Participate in collaborative editing processes and design reviews with our internal and external partners to ensure a high-quality and consistent product.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree in Education, English, Design, Technical Writing, Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Information Design, Education Technology or closely related field. Four years of experience in developing instructor-led, self-led, and eLearnings. Demonstrated experience designing and developing eLearning using tools such as Articulate Storyline, Camtasia, Adobe Creative Suite or equivalent tools. Experience with learning evaluation and assessment techniques; Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Licenses or Certifications:



  • Certificate in Instructional Design, Instructional Technology, Information Design, Education Technology or equivalent.


Required Knowledge and Skills:



  • Articulate Storyline, Adobe Captivate, Vyond or other eLearning authoring tools.
  • Excellent computer skills using Microsoft Office products.
  • Knowledge and practical experience delivering training using instructional design methodology and adult learning concepts, principles, and practices.
  • Proven experience designing courses from the ground up using industry-standard processes.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including verbal, written, presentation, and facilitation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels within the organization both technical and non-technical; ability to understand complex technical information and distill it for lay audiences.
  • Self-directed with strong project management skills.
  • Demonstrated graphic design skills.
  • Strong problem-solving, multitasking, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated understanding of trends in technology and adult learning.
  • Technical aptitude and willingness to learn new software and skills independently.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Impeccable writing and grammar skills and attention to detail.
  • Clear business writing skills.
  • Proven design acumen.
  • Ability to work with SMEs.


Preferred Knowledge and Skills:



  • Experience using learning management and/or content management systems - Cornerstone OnDemand.


Physical Demands / Work Environment:



  • Work is performed in a hybrid office and field environment.
  • Employees working in field, shop, warehouse, and/or transit vehicle environment may occasionally be exposed to dangerous machinery, extreme weather conditions, physical harm, hazardous chemicals, and/or extreme noise.
