Electro-Mechanical Technical Associate (R&D)

The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) offers scientific and industrial researchers an array of instruments (beamlines) using x-ray, ultraviolet, and infrared light to enable discoveries in clean and affordable energy, high-temperature superconductivity, molecular electronics, and more. The facility enables the study of material properties and functions with nanoscale resolution and exquisite sensitivity by providing world-leading capabilities for X-ray imaging and high-resolution energy analysis. The NSLSII supports an international user community of over 2,200 researchers from 400 universities.

The Optics Group at the National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) is actively seeking an Electro-Mechanical Technical Associate to support the daily operation of its Research and Development (R&D) labs. Aligned with NSLS-II's strategic objectives, the Optics Group plays an important role in advancing high-spatial-resolution imaging and high-coherent-flux scattering by employing cutting-edge optical design and modeling, sub-nanometer-level metrology, and diffraction-limited X-ray mirror fabrication techniques. With considerable latitude for the exercise of initiative and judgment, the successful candidate will perform duties of a technician for the maintenance, troubleshooting, testing and upgrade of UHV deposition chambers and thin films characterization equipment in support of NSLS-II optics group operations. The main task will be to maintain the large R&D deposition system and will require ability to troubleshoot and identify sources of failure and mitigate corrective action. Additionally, the candidate will also support the maintenance and troubleshooting of 2 smaller UHV chambers, one dedicated to Ion Beam Figuring and a new compact deposition/etching chamber (under development). The candidate will work on a varied set of scientific equipment including UHV systems, cryogenics, power supplies, motion control systems and machine automation. This position will require close interaction with scientific staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Provide technical support for the assembly, installation, commissioning, repair, upgrades and maintenance of a variety of experimental equipment. This includes bead blasting and cleaning of parts.

• Responsible of the general management of the group laboratories and technical space, including the ordering of consumables for operation of the R&D laboratories, maintaining supply and equipment inventories as well as ensuring lab readiness and cleanliness.

• Will assume the electrically competent person (ECP) role for the full Optics and Metrology group.

• Participate in field work and ongoing operations.

• Assist with deposition systems calibration, inspection, servicing, debugging, repairs, keeping accurate records of all repairs, maintenance, and fabrication activities taking place in the R&D labs.

• Work independently or in coordination with others (technicians, engineers and scientific staff) on specific tasks and projects.

• Keep accurate records of all repairs, maintenance, and fabrication activities taking place in the R&D labs.

• Perform housekeeping, labeling, storing, and proper disposal of hazardous materials in the R&D labs; stay current with all BNL required training.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• A high school diploma or equivalent plus:

• - a BS degree in a technical field and 4 years work experience or;
• - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 8 years experience or;
• - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 9 years relevant work experience or;
• - 10 years relevant work experience.

• Working knowledge in installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of electrical, vacuum, cryogenics and gas systems.

• Experience in installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of scientific research equipment related to vacuum systems, thin film deposition or metrology.

• Experience with bead blasting and cleaning of parts.

• Manual dexterity and experience working with hand and power tools for both assembly and disassembly of equipment, as well as with fine work for experimental setup.

• Ability to work from procedures, drawings, user manuals, and verbal instructions.

• Effective interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with a varied group of scientists and engineers.

• Interacting with suppliers of laboratory equipment including equipment/parts research and summarize findings for consideration by scientists.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent plus:

• - a BS degree in a technical field and 6 years work experience or;
• - a technical institute, Adult BOCES certification, AA degree in a technical field, CCI program completion at BNL plus 10 years experience or;
• - a technical high school certification program (eg. BOCES) and 11 years relevant work experience or;
• - 12 years relevant work experience.

• Knowledge of low/high pressure gas systems and vacuum operations.

• Experience with working with water cooled equipment/plumbing .

• Complex assemblies of scientific equipment using specialized .tools.

• Understanding of analog and digital circuitry.

• Experience in basic mechanical design.

• Experience with dicing saw operation.

• The selected candidate will be placed at an appropriate level that is commensurate with their experience, knowledge and skills.

Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable and competitive compensation. This is a multi-level role and the full salary range for this position is $81,000 - $115,000 / year. You will be placed at the level and salary commensurate with your experience. Salary offers will be commensurate with the final candidate's qualification, education and experience and considered with the internal peer group.
