Optical Test & Systems Engineer

Basic Function: Conducts environmental and mechanical tests on cables and assemblies following industry, corporate, and military standards and procedures. Sets up equipment, conducts experiments, calculates, and records the results.

Significant Responsibilities:

  1. Performs specific job responsibilities:
    • Understand and apply industrial, corporate, and military standards and procedures to test
      efforts.
    • Use computers and peripherals to obtain, organize, and correctly interpret significant
      amounts of data.
    • Troubleshoot test setups and catastrophic failures for root causes (able to locate bad
      splices, suspect optical interfaces, bad alignment sleeves, misconfigured equipment,
      computer malfunctions, etc.)
    • Perform inspections, testing, and analysis in support of customer complaints, return
      material authorizations, and root cause analysis using OTDR equipment.
    • Support production efforts by performing required inspections, analyses, and tests.
    • Update test log sheets, print test sheets, and generate test reports.
    • Support Interferometry and Visual Inspection testing.
    • Perform Group B testing for the M83522 product family.

Minimum Qualifications Required

Education: Associate degree in Engineering Technology or minimum 1 year of hands-on experience in fiber optic testing.

Experience, Essential Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel programs and FiberChek Pro, Connector Max endface testing software, and DORC or Daisi Data Pixel interferometry software. Ability to use Optotest, Rifocs, and/or Viavi equipment, including light sources, power meters, microscopes, switches, and OTDRs. Able to read and interpret assembly and engineering drawings and identify standard color coding of fiber optic cables. Must have eye and hand coordination for detailed ability to recognize mechanical fit problems. Ability to read and understand work instructions and procedures. Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Ability to organize, complete tasks, and effectively manage time. Pay close attention to detail and have the ability to recognize and resolve problems.

Working Conditions: This is a sedentary job that requires sufficient vision for significant reading, computer usage, and troubleshooting. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. This work also requires an individual with sufficient hearing.
