Employee Health & Safety Intern

Overview

The Facility Services Department is looking for an enthusiastic and responsible Environmental Health and Safety Intern to join our team. As an Environmental Health and Safety Intern at MIT Lincoln Laboratory, you will work with an EHS specialist/manager to undertake projects directed at specific topics, such as equipment safety, chemical safety, occupational ergonomics, and training & education.

The Intern in Health and Safety (EHS) will serve the building facilities safety needs, including adherence to environmental and safety compliance and risk management. They will work closely with facilities, engineering, laboratories and other groups to help the organization ensure the safety of all employees and ensure safety regulations are adhered to. To do this, the intern will participate in many activities and tasks which will include inspections, investigations, root cause analysis, risk assessments, report generation, training and other key compliance activities.

Internship Work Period: Must be available to work full-time (approximately 40 hours per week) during a 10-12 week period beginning in May or June 2025. Specific start dates will be shared during the recruiting process.

Position Description

This role will help the organization ensure compliance with EHS regulatory requirements and adherence to Biogen EHS Management System:



  • Help the FSD Safety department with communication materials.
  • Support inspections regulated to programs (ladder safety, laboratory safety, etc).
  • Develop EHS Spotlight communications.
  • Conduct safety audits and inspections.
  • Complete chemical inventory in laboratories and manufacturing.
  • Under the direction of site personnel, assist with EHS event investigations.
  • Conduct risk assessments such as job hazard assessments, ergonomic evaluations and equipment safety assessments.
  • Educate and oversee employees on health and safety procedures, and regulations Liaison with the EHS department on special continuous improvement projects.
  • Encourage and promote the use of safer work equipment, materials and supplies.

Qualifications

  • Be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite, such as PowerPoint, Word, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and the abilityto multitask.
  • Ability to develop and maintain key projects metrics and assure compliance with federal, state, local and corporate policies.
  • Knowledge in local, state, national, and international laws and regulations related to the protection of the environment, and the health and safety of our employees.

Education

  • University Enrollment: Must be currently enrolled in and returning to an accredited degree-seeking academic program in the Fall, with a graduation date of no earlier than August 2025.
  • Interest or majoring in Environmental Health Science, Industrial Hygiene, Safety Management or related Life Sciences degree.
