Advanced Practice Provider (PA/NP) Inpatient Nephrology

Position Description:

The Medical College of Wisconsin's Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology is seeking a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant to provide primary or specialty medical care within defined scope of practice under the supervision of a licensed physician and in accordance with MCW/FMLH/CHW policies and procedures. Located in Milwaukee, WI at Froedtert Hospital and Outpatient Dialysis Centers.

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works as part of a multidisciplinary health care team, providing a broad range of diagnostic and therapeutic services for the patients of the inpatient services as a member of the Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology.

The APP will have a strong foundation in evidence-based practice and ensure an environment of safe quality care.

In this role you will be responsible for the following:

  • Collaborates with interdisciplinary health care teams in diagnosis and treatment of conditions requiring medical intervention in inpatient environment as a member of the General Nephrology service.
  • Writes accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information.
  • Privileged to perform procedures beyond core as identified by the Nephrology services.
  • Facilitates and communicates with patient, family and staff to promote continuity of care across the continuum of care.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Join Commission.
  • Evaluates quality outcomes for the patients receiving care of this team through participation in the development of quality indicators and outcomes dashboard.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature

Core Advanced Practice Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive histories and physical exams, identifies normal and abnormal findings, including physical, cognitive, and psychosocial status.
  • Order, perform, and interpret screening and diagnostic procedures and tests, and appropriately communicates and documents information
  • Write accurate and timely progress notes, procedure notes, and/or admission and transfer orders
  • Develop pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatment plans.
  • Monitor effectiveness of plan of care
  • Educate patients on disease and treatment plans.
  • Perform procedures as trained and appropriately credentialed.
  • Document within the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) and completes other necessary documents.
  • Collaborate and/or consults with physicians and other health care providers as appropriate.
  • Educates, counsels, and assists patients and families regarding current health problems, health maintenance activities and preventive behaviors.
  • Attend required training and meets key regulatory requirements, including those of the privileging institution, CMS, and the Joint Commission.
  • Acquires information on the most current development and trends in the Physician Assistant field and/or Nurse Practitioner field, through educational programs, in-services, professional associates, and current literature.

Preferred Schedule: Workweek: Nocturnal rotating schedule, 12-13 shifts per month. Saturday to Sunday 6pm-7am or 7pm-8am. Scheduling flexibility required to provide an appropriate level of patient care coverage.

Preferred Experience: Preference will be given to practitioners with prior experience in hospital based care or medical/surgical patients, specifically those with nephrology or dialysis experience

Minimum Education:

Advanced Practice Nurse: Master's Degree or higher in Nursing
Physician Assistant: Bachelor's Degree or higher in Physician Assistant Studies

Minimum Requirements: *or eligible

  • Wisconsin RN License
  • Wisconsin Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber License
  • Certification as Advanced Practice Nurse
  • Certification as Acute Care NP preferred
  • Will consider certification as Family Practice NP and/or Adult Care NP
  • AHA BCLS
  • CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire

Physician Assistant

  • Wisconsin Physician Assistant License
  • Certification by NCCPA
  • AHA BCLS
  • CITI Certification to be completed within 90 days of hire
