The Department of Sports Medicine in Athletics at West Virginia University is accepting applications for an Assistant Athletic Director, Head Athletic Trainer for Football.

What You'll Do



  • Coordinate the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and management of athletic-related injuries for assigned student-athletes.
  • Administer emergency care and assist in making medical referrals.
  • Manage system of injury records on appropriate student-athletes.
  • Coordinate communication among parent, physician, student-athlete, coach, dietician as well as sports psychologist/mental health professional(s).
  • Assist in the facilitation of drug testing process as applicable in conjunction with the NCAA, Big 12 Conference and WVU Athletics.
  • Become and maintain the status of a Preceptor. Following are the requirements:




    • Become a Preceptor through the NATA Education Council and maintain this certification.
    • Assist students in mastering the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) athletic training educational and clinical competencies.
    • Clinically supervise all athletic training students assigned to your respective athletic training room/clinical site.
    • The Preceptor should have a full working knowledge of all programs ' policies and procedures as outlined by the West Virginia University undergraduate and/or graduate athletic training curriculum(s).
    • The Preceptor must re-evaluate the athletic training students' application learned skills over a period of time.
    • Educate athletic training students in their preparation to take the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (BOC) exam.
    • Help students identify and possess the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to become an entry-level certified athletic trainer.




  • Supervise professional staff of athletic trainer(s)
  • Supervise all athletic training students assigned to the sport of Football.
  • Maintain BOC and CPR certification, as well as WV State Registration.
  • It is the Assistant Athletics Director, Head - Football Trainer's responsibility to be knowledgeable and comply with all of West Virginia University policies and the policies of the Big 12 Conference and the NCAA. Failure to adhere to these policies will result in appropriate disciplinary action including possible suspension and termination.
  • Athletic Trainers/Physical Therapists will represent the university on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior.
  • The Assistant Athletics Director, Head - Football Trainer must comply with the NATA Code of Ethics and/or the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) Code of Ethics.
  • Faithfully and diligently carries out related duties of the department, as requested or assigned by Athletics Medical Director, Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director, and Director of Athletics.
  • Represent the University on the highest professional level with dignity, integrity, and strength of character and will exhibit ethical behavior; must respect the rights and dignity of individuals with sensitivity to problems that may arise from racial and ethnical differences.
  • Demonstrate a cooperative attitude towards all other sports within the intercollegiate athletics program.
  • Work closely with Strength and Conditioning staff to implement "return to play" protocols.
  • Possess the ability to adapt to any situation, make decisions and work independently; position must have the ability to build and maintain relationships with student-athletes, coaches, staff members and constituencies; required to use creative abilities to develop new techniques and approaches in dealing with many issues controlled by this position; responsibilities of the position are ever-changing and require constant education; requires the ability to adapt to any situation and make decisions.
  • Manage sensitive and confidential information related to student-athletes, coaches and staff utilizing discretion and correct decisions. Failure to use proper discretion at required level could result in major and significant embarrassment to the University and/or have a significant impact on image, revenues and eligibility of student-athletes.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or further-advanced degree.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of experience involving:

    • Athletic Training and/or physical therapy experience at the NCAA Division I level.
    • Proven experience in the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of injured student-athletes


  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered.
  • All requirements must be met by the time of employment.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA Division I intercollegiate athletics.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NCAA and conference guidelines, policies, rules and regulations with the ability to interpret, apply, enforce and explain such policies and rules.
  • Maintain knowledge of state and University policies and procedures.
  • Exhibit strong creative, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of correct English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and sentence structure
  • Demonstrated ability to function professionally under high stress and confrontational circumstances.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks for extended period of time.
  • Demonstrated ability to independently plan and organize work.
  • Proactive attitude towards work and assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain and develop personal contacts with outside groups, i.e. student-athletes, professional representatives, fans, media, donors, University community.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of record keeping and adherence to schedule.
  • Ability to stay abreast of information impacting the affected area.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and motivate groups and individuals.
  • Ability to maintain proper unit attendance and punctuality standards, work extended hours including nights and weekends (often with extensive walking and standing).
  • Demonstrated skills in management of an intercollegiate athletics training program.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effected areas of involvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage personnel.
  • Ability to make administrative procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Demonstrated ability to drive and travel via motor vehicle.

Requirements

Licenses/Certifications



  • Current National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification (NATABOC).
  • WV State Athletic Training License Prior to Start Date
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certifications.
