Job Summary

The Producer II creates news and content for local and regional public media audiences. Plans, writes, reports, performs and executes assigned broadcast news assignments and/or longer form stories for digital, radio and television.

WGCU is Southwest Florida's source for PBS and NPR. A member-supported service of Florida Gulf Coast University, WGCU provides educational programming that inspires, informs and engages our community. Serving all or part of 12 counties in south and Southwest Florida, with five distinct digital TV channels, two FM radio channels, two HD radio channels, and multiple websites, WGCU delivers national and international programming, and develops, produces and delivers relevant, informative and educational local programs to the region.

Job Description

Typical duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Develops and creates news content for video, radio, and digital platforms.
  • Writes, directs, and performs news segments for broadcast and online channels.
  • Works closely with the program host, producers, editors, and other newsroom personnel to brainstorm and plan content ideas.
  • Manages guest scheduling, source coordination, and logistical arrangements for program recordings.
  • Assists the host by conducting research on relevant topics.
  • Supports the production of show tapings.
  • Edits and prepares stories for broadcast, digital, and social media platforms.
  • Participates in efforts to promote the program.
  • Oversees lighting and audio requirements for specific field and studio projects.
  • Collaborates with the production team to set up studio environments, including sets, lighting, and sound.
  • Assists the Executive Producer in managing project budgets.

Other Duties:

  • Professional, full-time experience in television and/or radio broadcasting, with a willingness to be on camera.
  • Experience with producing, scripting, and basic editing longer form content.

Additional Job Description

Required Qualifications:

  • This position requires either eight years of directly related full-time experience or, as an alternative, a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization and four years of full-time experience directly related to the job functions.
  • Professional, full time experience in television and/or radio broadcasting with a willingness to be on camera.
  • Experience with producing, scripting, and editing long format documentaries.
  • Any appropriate combination of relevant education, experience, and/or certifications may be considered.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in an appropriate area of specialization.
  • 2 years professional, full time experience in television and/or radio broadcasting.
  • Experience using Adobe Premiere/Adobe Audition
  • Experience using an HD camera.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of public broadcasting industry; awareness of news techniques and practices.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures, and guidelines established by professional news organizations and/or governing agencies.
  • Excellent oral, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Skill in current digital audio editing and general desktop software applications.
  • Skilled in researching topics for news and interview broadcasts utilizing various resources.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to prioritize and complete simultaneous projects within deadlines.
  • Ability to establish and maintain a good rapport with university faculty, staff, students, and the general public.
  • Ability to adapt quickly to changing situations and environments.
  • Knowledge of live, multi-camera studio productions.
  • Ability to use microphones, portable recording devices, and video studio production equipment.
  • Ability to collaborate and work effectively within a diverse community and willing to contribute to a team effort.
  • Ability to diffuse and respond professionally to stressful situations and difficult people.
  • Ability to thrive in an organization that values the diversity of its student body and workforce and actively promotes an equitable environment.
