What your job will be like:

Do you have a passion for solving technical challenges in pursuit of groundbreaking science? At Jefferson Lab, our Engineering Division provides technical services to the entire lab to support ongoing accelerator operations and other lab initiatives. We are seeking a skilled, self-motivated individual to join our Cryogenics Group as anElectrical, Instrumentation and Controls (EI&C)Technician, who is self-motivated and has a proficiency and understanding of highly complex electrical components. Maintain highly complex electrical, electronic, or mechanical equipment, structures, components or portions of systems and facilitate operations. Participate in the maintenance and repair of cryogenic electrical and electronic equipment, instrumentation, and controls within cryogenics operations. Provide technical support for modification and/or installation projects and update "as built" drawings and other documentation. Operate various types of rotating and reciprocating machines such as helium screw compressors, helium reciprocating expansion engines, vacuum pumps, and all associated components that support ongoing testing and accelerator operations. Maintain the operations logbook, maintenance records, and other documentation.

In this role, you will:



  • Install, maintain, and repair medium and low-voltage cryogenic electrical equipment, wiring, and conduits
  • Install, maintain, and repair instrumentation, cryogenic control system, electric and pneumatic valves
  • Operate cryogenic equipment including supporting operations
  • Perform tasks such as sensor calibration, wiring repairs, troubleshooting of control systems, installation and hookup of electrical motors, and installation of conduit.Document work in operations logbooks, maintenance records, "as built" drawings, and any other forms as required by management. Complete assigned tasks utilizing work control documents and safety procedures.
  • Involved in the daily operations of the helium refrigeration plants. This may include starting/stopping machinery, system monitoring, opening/closing valves, and receiving gas deliveries.

    • Support operations as a cryogenics coordinator on-call and responding to after-hours operational emergencies.

    Qualifications We Require



    • High School Diploma
    • 2 or more years of relevant experience.Education above the minimum may be substituted for experience.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities



    • Knowledge of the safe and proper use of hand tools, hardware, and power tools
    • Knowledge of the safe and proper use of electrical diagnostics equipment such as multimeters, meggers, etc.
    • The ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, control enclosure drawings, and equipment manuals.
    • The ability to safely troubleshoot and understand the operation of electrical equipment, the basics of cryogenic control systems and instrumentation
    • Basic computer skills
